Have been watching this router as a potential replacement for a converted $39 t-mobile -> ac68u that still seems to still be working well (with a second hardwired mesh) for 50+ devices.

Still can't bring myself to spend that much on a router that was released in July 2020 (basically 3 months shy of 3 years at this point). I feel like 99-130 would be a slick deal.

TP Link routers generally have more limitations than the Asus routers. Before buying any router, I would search Dong Knows Tech. Lots of information about all of the big brands and how to buy a router. If you take the time, you will learn alot and it will help you make an informed decision about what you need in a router. For me, the AI Mesh upgradeability and the ability to customize the router (a little harder to setup) makes Asus the way to go.

Fantastic router and range. I have 2 smaller S versions. Put Merlin on it: https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/ but the hardware is great. The U has the same wireless chip as S but the 2.5GB port and it's 3 or 4-core CPU vs dual-core I believe, and also has 512 RAM vs 256 as the S.

I am getting ~ 600-740 Mbit/s download on wireless real world performance throughout the place with 2 AX86S in AirMesh on 5ghz (Ethernet backhaul). ~940 ish download via ethernet (Comcast 1.2 Gbit/s connection). Same on iPhone 13/14. Super stable connection. Netgear CM1100 modem.

Is this worth the upgrade from the Asus AC1900 router?

Night and day, this router kills it specially if you play video games. ASUS app is so much better than Netgear. I recently switch a week ago. There's a lot of things you can control within the app. You don't have to use your desktop to change any settings at all

It used to be called Suddenlink, but they got bought out by Optimum in my area last year. Our towns electrical, cable and internet were all destroyed in Hurricane Laura. When they rebuilt all that, they installed high speed here. It really shocked a lot of us, because we only have a population of around 800 people in this small community. I'm pretty sure they received some emergency federal money to help rebuild the infrastructure after the hurricane.
Thanks for responding. Sorry you had to go through Laura but at least you got much upgraded internet service out of it.

Note to thread contributers - It helps to know what ISP people are using when they give testimonials (positive and\or negative) on their experience with routers and modems, etc., because so often certain hardware works better or worse with particular ISPs.

Thanks again.

On Xfinity I get 800 Mbps down, and 32 Mbps up on wifi.

On Consolidated Fiber, I get 400 Mbps down and 800 Mbps up on wifi.

Who else has the same problem? I already did a factory reset and I checked the ROUTER speed test setting that is built in with router and it said 900 down and 900 up.

It's a stripped down version. Has half the cores, half the RAM, half the USB 3.0 ports and missing the 2.5Gbps LAN/WAN port.

I'm exactly in the same boat. I purchased the AX86U Pro but I've been running a AC86U flawless for many years. They are very expensive routers so why change what it works. My AC68U cost me a fourth of the price of the AX86U. Anyways, my wifi speeds have improved immensely. Other than that I don't see a big difference.

Question: Could the old AC68U be used in mesh mode with the AX86U but just in the 2.4Ghz network?
I have a AI mesh setup using tmo ac68U. I bought an AC86 to be the main router and AI-meshed both AC68U from tmo deals. Works like a charm. My recommendation is to use different SSID for 5G and 2.4G. So your old Wi-Fi enabled device can still work. I ran into issues when using same SSID when my iPhone tries to connect to 2.4G channels all the time. It's not that smart when to choose a reliable 2.4G or less stronger 5G signal.

I live in urban area and personally I would pay a bit more and go for wifi 6e router. Not many people have those yet so you're gonna have all that spectrum to yourself.

Wifi 6 routers are great if you live in more rural areas or expensive neighbourhoods where you have a lot of space between houses. Then interference from your neighbours is not an issue.

Thank you very much for the reply although I just bought the AX86U and I've heard that the AC and AX routers in mesh mode don't run very smoothly. Yours, if I'm not mistaking, are both AC routers?

My AX86u recently started rebooting and disconnecting. It is 2.5 years old. It has been 2 months since I setup AI mesh with an AC86U and an AC68P as wired nodes. It did reduce the total wifi client count on the AX86U from 54 to 30 with the nodes taking up the slack.

I'm going to try a used AX89X which is $202 from Amazon warehouse since it has a 2.2Ghz quad-core CPU. The fastest CPU ASUS has in its routers but has a fan that some say will make noise and die. I have a fan on the AX86u anyways.

If that can't handle my usage I'll build a PFsense or OPNsense box and use the routers as APs since they are wired anyways.

I'm tired of disconnections when I know I can get a guaranteed connection off the wired network with a wired router/firewall.
