A bit confused on hybrid also.. but it uses a laser and 2 LEDs. Seems decent for the price.

Probably the lowest price I've seen.

Last deal that was posted about a month ago was around $1600 I believe.

I do own HU810pw which is higher model of this unit and I love it. Difference is HU810pw gets brighter and uses 2 laser source instead of hybrid that you mentioned.

LG's Smart OS (called Web os) is my favorite one besides Android TV. Runs streaming apps, mirror image, casting video flawlessly with no issue.

On Amazon it's been this price for months until recently.

Wow, I was just eyeing this and was willing to pull the trigger at $1,700. This was frontpage just last month at $1,500.

I'm comparing this to the Optomo uhd38x for $1000 on amazon. I'm not a gamer and only interested in using in my home theater that is totally dark.

Any recommendation between the 2?

I am so used to silent TVs, the projectors with active cooling always catch me off guard.

Agreed, probably the most polished native smart OS I've used. Now if only Peacock and Paramount+ would get their shit together and allow their apps on WebOS to support 5.1 audio... sigh

This summer, I'm thinking it would be cool to have my kids' friends come over, lay out some chairs, and blast a movie (I have one of those big party bluetooth boombox things) We have a pretty big driveway to play with, and two possible spots for the screen (see attached image).

I have power sources outside and extension cords are not a problem. It gets really dark at night, only star light.

Can anyone in here recommend a good, ideally inexpensive, way to accomplish this?

I believe you are confused with different model.

Per Camel camel camel, price of a new unit never went under $1599

Also see previous sd post of this unit when price went down to $1500 (not on Amazon, i believe it was also from buydig?)

You may not need top of the line projector, if you are going to only use it in dark and less frequently.
An entry to moderate level projector from optima/benq/Epson… with 3000+ lumens of brightness will do the job.
If you want to make it more sophisticated, add good audio system.
Location 2 look more appealing in picture for this setup.

I've had great results with scooby doo movies on my garage wall, around the pool, with yard lights about 30ft away and a fire pit going...on a $100 Amazon projector and some old hardwired computer speakers.

To be fair, animation is easy to make look good!

It's nice that it includes dynamic tone mapping for HDR at this price point. Maybe the cheapest projector with tone mapping. brightness may be on the low side if you don't have total light control
