Soooo much misinformation in this thread - the 5d Mark iv has NEVER been $1200 - the R6 and R5 are NOT outdated cameras - the R3 DOES NOT have the same sensor as the R6

If your buying your kid a camera DO NOT buy any of the "M" series cameras - the lens system is being discontinued .. Stick to the Rebel (EF mount) or any R series camera (RF mount)

Canon is the one of the LEAST EXPENSIVE SYSTEMS once you factor in the cost of lenses and accessories (i expect flack for this statement but i can prove it)

Canon and Sony have THE BEST autofocus - Nikon is a distant 3rd

Yes i have used all 3 systems. I have not tried the Z9 yet

Which camera should you buy - probably none of these listed unfortunately - the tech is moving soooo fast right now its hard to recommend anything other than the R7 ($1000 - APSC sensor) or R8 ($1500 Full Frame - larger - sensor)

Agree with pretty much everything in your post, but I'll pick a nit with this M series recommendation. The lens series is fairly complete, at least for a kid's use, and you'll be able to find cheap copies for a long time. You can have the whole series for around the cost of one of the nice EF/RF zooms. An EF/M lens adapter can fill any perceived gaps and prepare them for a more professional camera/lens range -- one that's also on its way out, but will live forever on auction sites.

The M6 mk II is an excellent little camera (in fact, it's the usual backup to my R5), though a kid could certainly make do with less. For certain applications and for smaller muscles the size/weight of the M-series cameras can be a tremendous advantage over pretty much anything in the EF/RF range.

Considering the Rebel T7 ($320) for my kid who wants to get into photography... anyone have an opinion on that vs. a comparably-priced alternative?
It's a pretty basic bottom-end camera and $320 for it is way overpriced. I would suggest looking for a better-specified dslr or mirrorless on the used market. For $320, you should be able to find a pretty great higher-end camera used that will serve your son better in learning photography. For example, you can get a used Canon XXD series camera like a 70D for less than you pay for that crappy low end camera that will run rings around it, have better features, and better build quality.

I agree the 5D MIV isn't the top budget tier anymore. The new Canon R6 is about the best pro-am camera out there right now in the Canon lineup. Has the same sensor at the R3 at a fraction of the cost. Unless you're needing to do a lot of cropping.
Same MP but is it the same? The R3 says it's a stacked CMOS?

The T7i is certainly not in the same ballpark as the T7. There is a very important distinction between the "regular" and "i" model rebels. The T7 is not nearly as good as the T7i. Same goes for the T6 vs T6i etc.
He asked for a good beginner camera and I gave him one!

The R6 uses the 1DXIII sensor (minus the enhanced AA filter), the R3 and R6II are new sensors.

Thanks for your helpful comments that most likely have saved me thousands of dollars.

A lot of people are selling their 5D models for around $500-$700 on ebay.

But as you said, I might just forget Canon and switch to Nikon all together.

If you find a functional 5D Mark IV on eBay for $500-700, buy it. That sounds more like what you'd buy a mark iii for. Mark IV goes for twice that all day long.

Ra-ku-ten (take the hyphens away) had a Canon refurb cashback of 7.5% a few days ago.
I'm hoping it goes up to 10% or 15%, then this sale would actually be worthwhile.

Disagree on your opinion of the M-system. The EF system is also a dead end. Canon does not develop new cameras or lenses for neither EOS M oder EOS EF. That being said, the cameras don't become useless over night. Lenses will still be around for the next 10-20 years. Both systems will have cheap lenses, as people upgrade to EOS R. I think therefore the EOS M50 is still one of the best beginner cameras you can buy.

Still waiting the R to go sub-$1000, the R6 $1500, and the R5 $2500. Since we're dealing with Canon, maybe holiday 2024.
I think it's a joke that a 2 year old camera still costs over $3000 refurbished. Meanwhile you get a just 1 year older refurbished Sony A7RIV with a 60 megapixel sensor for as low as $2000.

If anyone is interested in getting the r5 for the new pixel shift feature firmware, just note it is very limited in use. Any movement and there will be weird vertical and horizontal crossing lines once zoomed it. It is nice canon does do the stitching in camera vs the Sony, but the downside is you probably will get these artifacts vs the Sony. I don't have the Sony, but I think it uses AI to allow for some handheld pixelshift. But you do have to use a computer to stitch it though. So pick your poison. The canon output files are roughly 130-160MB jpegs. No raw outputs. And since it is generate in camera, the sub images are consumed during the process.

I don't disagree, but I think it goes to show that Canon devices hold their value and have a higher "perceived," long-term value compared to Sony. And, if you want Canon's color science, you've got to pay the Canon-tax.
