For reference I am posting am Ebay Sellers link disclaimer I am not the seller nor do I know how good they are bur seems their feedback is good.

For $250 you get Micro Server Gen 8 w Xeon Proc.any xeon from 5 or more years old will still blow any of their gimped Cpu on the newer syno boxes they make them cute minus the processors.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/22502921...media=COPY [ebay.com]

has 8 GB RAM TO boot as well, ram really makes a big difference when you run plex containers vm or just host applications like photo manager, copy large files or multi task.

I get for those who don't or have the money to $ afford should get the NAS from Synology but what I hate is they and QNAp both put half arse decent CPU only on $$$$ boxes not the 200 300 500$ nas. and it's a shame the boxes are very capable minus the ram and cpu pre installed from syno.

also some Xpenology like HP Microserver Gen 10 Plus that comes with Intel Pentium CpU You can upgrade the Cpu again for DiY ers primarily so ymmv.

^ This is the key thing here. People always post about how you can build or buy a box to be a NAS that's cheaper or better than something like a Synology. I worked in IT for a lot of years and the last thing I want to do when I get home is tinker with stuff like this after tinkering with stuff at work. I want to buy something purpose-made that does what it's made to do and I don't have to think about it. I'm very happy with my Synology even if it cost more, or, is less powerful than, a similarly spec'd homemade system.
Amen. To each his or her own but there are good causes for people to make difference choices. Likewise working in IT, have been for decades now, ample knowledge to build out a datacenter, if needed. Not keen on DIY NAS for my home use so I use a QNAP that does what I want, including a Plex server. Rarely, if ever, do the devices we use at home ever call for video transcoding on the fly, only audio, so a lower-powered CPU running Plex isn't a problem even with multiple movies streaming at once (6 person household, all using Plex on the regular).

Another nice thing is that it sits quietly and politely in the entertainment center next to the Gaming consoles, AV Receiver, etc. It's just another device on the shelves that needs no special attention and doesn't bother anyone by being there.

If I was really interested in DIY I'd fit rack into the basement and build it out with all the stuff my wife would complain about. ;-) But, I have plenty of other hobbies and I prefer ones that don't really mirror my day job in any significant way.

QNAP or Synology or others, they serve a purpose just as DIY can and does. Pick what's best for you and your life.

Xpenology forums. There are detailed step by step guides and the community is very helpful..

https://xpenology.com/forum/

xpenology basically allows you to run Synology DSM Disk Station manager on Non Synology boxes..you can make DIY a very powerful NAS if cost is not a big concern.
I didn't know this was possible! Since no cloud is involved, I don't care if DSM isn't exactly 'full' featured so long as it sets the foundation software

Quick connect does not need any port forwarding, so double-check if QS services is running properly.and that your Synology account shows the NAS online.

Also you can try asking on Synology forums..

I would but I didn't want to buy the software to stitch them into enough storage. You can only map so many drives

I personally think that with these huge hard drive capacities, you should run SHR-2, and that means a 5 bay or higher NAS. If running Plex, use a Intel NUC with an 8th gen or higher processor and you'll have a compact low noise power sipping HTPC.

lI feel that Synology is going backwards with these newer models and 1gbit Ethernet is a huge bottleneck for striped arrays.

I'm not seeing the matching deal on Amazon anymore. Was it a certain seller or another version I'm not seeing? If anyone has a working link, please share as I'd rather buy via Amazon with the extra 5% back. Thank you

Tx! Have an older DS1512+ and just had a HD crash. It's been so reliable for over 10+ years but now showing it's age when I noticed it no longer gets the DSM updates (stuck at 6.2x) and HD choices are minimal. I think I'll be saving now for Black Friday.

Also seems like these Seagate Ironwolf drives are taking over vs WD Red. Anyone have extra insight? Cheaper? Better performance? BOTH???
