For anyone that purchases this, be sure to download the Samsung Magician software and confirm or update the firmware. Samsung had a bad batch of firmware on the 2tb 980 Pro that can miscalculate the drive usage which results in it thinking you've exceeded the max safe usage and it will lock the drive to read-only to keep your data "safe". I'm currently dealing with that now through Samsung's warranty service and it's been a frustrating process.

Only the ones manufactured in 2021 AND with the firmware starting with #3. Gonna be rare to receive 2021 stock 2 years later. But I guess it's just good practice to check anyways

I don't have a pc do be able to do that. Should I skip this deal or is there a way to check the firmware through ps5?

Lol I mean.. "I" wouldn't care or be worried lol, emphasis on the "I" part. I'm also an idiot so probably not the best person to ask lol

If it makes you feel better, I got the 980 pro w/ heatsink for $144 from this deal

And I checked the firmware, it was already up to date..

This or the Corsair MP600 Pro LPX deal that has been going on for a while? Mainly want it to expand my PS5 storage. Thanks.
Wasn't the mp600 pro LPX $121? Buying a heatsink puts you at $140~

$20 more for the Samsung, but you probably won't even notice the speed difference in a PS5

Showing $134.99 when logging in w/ EDU discount at Samsung. Note there is also 10% back from a popular cash back site if you search. Trying to decide to pull the trigger to use with my PS5...

Appreciate it! Settled for 6% cb, but also was able to use some Samsung reward points and CC points to make my out of pocket too good to pass up. Perfect timing as I had to choose my favorite child when buying a new game last night.

Samsung charges a premium for the performance and the name. Keep in mind that Intel has exited this business, so it's really Solidigm (SK Hynix) that is selling these now.

I had the same attitude as you and bought a 980 Pro last summer. If I was better educated, I would have bought a cheaper drive for my use case (gaming). It's not as though games in 3-4 years are going to saturate a PCIe Gen4x4 link. A Gen4x4 link is 8 GB/s. Even after accounting for the protocol overheads, you're still getting way faster transfers than a game is ever going to use. In fact, Microsoft, when designing the XBox Series S/X opted for a Gen4x2 link, even though quick load times are a major selling point of that platform.
But as I explained I was referring to the boot/system drive, where the OS and its pagefile and other frequently-accessed files are stored, not the game drive. You always want to make the former as fast and responsive as possible, less so secondary drives. Plus not everyone's a gamer. Most people aren't, not serious ones.

I brought two 980 Pro 2TB with heat sinks for my PS5. After formating both, speed was about 6500 MBps.

Awesome. Any idea about the speed for 990 pro?I'm thinking to order either one.

Appreciate it if you can advise which CB has 10%. I can only find CB for 6% only.

I have no experience with the 990 Pro. Just the 980 Pro. I remember reading that there is a speed cap of the M.2 for the PS5.

I bought this as the main drive of my PC om November, and it has been flawless. Back then, it was on sale for $180, so this is a great price.

This would be a good deal if the 990 Pro weren't cheaper right now. If you need the heatsink, then that can be acquired for $10.

Also, for PC gamers, there's not much reason to shell out for this compared to something like the Intel 670p which has been $80 for 2 TB for close to a month. You're not going to see more than a 5% difference in load times going with a higher end drive. Maybe DirectStorage will change that, but initial DirectStorage games don't seem to really take much advantage of SSD speed.
Where can you get the 990 w/ heat sink for cheaper than $150? I have only seen it w/o the heatsink for $144 when you add $10 for the heatsink, it's not cheaper.

The 990 isn't justifiable vs the 980 for a PS5 application even for the extra $5. They are both overspeced for what one needs in a PS5.

If the 990 were truly cheaper than the 980, then that would be the way to go.

If you pay $10 for a heatsink on Amazon, then it comes out to $154. Why pay $150 for 980 pro with heatsink when you can have 990 pro with heatsink for $154? If that step up isn't worth $4, then you should get something cheaper than the 980 pro for a PS5. Just searching on Amazon I found an SSD with PS5 compatible specs for $135.

Any reason to buy this over the 2TB Crucial P5 Plus for $122 other than marginal speed improvement?
