Just FYI. 4070 performs basically the same as 3070ti. 4070 is slightly better at lower resolution @ 1080p, slightly worse at higher resolution @ 4k, due to the disgustingly limited 128bit VRAM bandwidth this generation. I would expect the price to fall at least another 20% before it stabilizes a bit.

Wondering if I should return my MBP16 Pro (16GB/512GB) for this Lenovo. I can probably add another SSD and max out the RAM on the Lenovo for dev work. But I like the handoff/continuity feature on Apple devices. Argggg. Decision decision

This or the:
- L5P Gen 7 with AMD R9 6900HX, RTX 3070 Ti, 32GB RAM, and 2TB SSD for about the same price (the Ryzen 7 variant is around $100 cheaper)
- Alienware m15 R7 with AMD R9 6900HX, RTX 3080, 32GB RAM, and 1TB SSD that I can get it for lower than this deal by adding email coupon and removing support
- ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 with Intel i9-12900H, RTX 3070 Ti, 16GB DDR5, 1TB SSD for the same price

I care about build quality and gaming performance above all, but this machine will be used for gaming, some productivity (mainly PS and Illustrator) and light office work (basic MS Office stuff), media consumption so the display and speakers must be good. Portability and good battery life when I'm out or on bed would be appreciated too.

Thanks!

I vote the Legion 5 Pro. The Ryzen doesn't give the same performance, but it's more power efficient. You get more RAM and SSD space that you'd likely be spending to add anyway. You also get the previous gen's chassis, which wasn't cheapened and uglified (Legion Pro).

The R9 or save more and go with the R7?

msrp 4060 and 4070 laptops is silly, but this is probably the first one worth considering vs 3070ti laptops that tend to be about the same price range with the same higher quality screens.

I have a 4090 desktop and DLSS 3 is pretty sick and I'd argue its easily worth $100-200 premium over the equivalent performing 30 series mobile gpu.

do you have info on this? I know the legion 7 is a pretty big premium downgrade this year to knock down the price, but I don't think the legion 5 pro has big changes from last year besides 1 usb-c port becoming a usb-a and offering a 300 nits screen option for the cheapest tier (which this deal isn't).

Weird, I remember being able to remove it. Looks like they made it mandatory now.

When I add the laptop to the cart with the "get this deal" button from the deals page, they will offer me to remove the support option but the discounted amount will get back in cart again. However, when I go and build the model by myself there will be no way to remove the support at all. Bad move by Dell.

As someone who owns plenty of Apple and Windows devices, I feel like I'm always trading one set of conveniences for another set of inconveniences.

If I remember correctly, it's about $100 difference. I would spring for the 6900HX for a bit more future-proofing.

If I'm not mistaken, the Legion 5 Gen 7 was a big jump from Gen 6 and inherited characteristics of the Legion 7. You get the recessed rear port area and a more robust chassis. I'm not sure if the rear port icons light up or not like on the Legion 7.

The Gen 8 still has an 80whr battery, so you don't get anything there either. I think that's another pro for the Legion 5 Pro.

The new Pro series also downgrades the default display to 300nit. You have to pay extra for 500nit, although it was only $30 or so last I saw.

Just a heads up. I have basically the same laptop only with a 3070. If you don't have the power cord plugged in, the video card performance is cut in half.
