As minwoo832 mentioned, the "catch" is that ZIP Air is JAL's Low Cost Carrier (LCC) spinoff. Think Spirit Airlines but international.

There's no free meal service, and the meals they offer are very basic if you order them in advance. They're also served about an hour into your flight and that's it. If you get hungry half-way across the ocean, you can order some candy or instant ramen, but that's it, and you pay for everything.

The seats are average to slightly above-average for economy flights to Asia.

You can bring a carry-on and a personal item on board for free ... but only if their combined weight is under 7kg (~15lbs). Checked bags are $50-60 each way.

It's still a good price, but:

Add $100 to check a bag, unless you're the kind of person who likes to wash underwear in the shower while you're on vacation; and:

Plan to bring your own pillow, blanket, food, and entertainment.
There's this deal with Singapore Airlines for $680, but you won't be nickel'd and dime'd for everything like with zipair.

catch is that you need to sit in that flight

Only catch is that this is a budget airline. As OP mentioned, they charge for everything extra (e.g. seat selection, meals, luggage). So don't expect some of the best services like ANA, Cathay, or Singapore.

$356 * 2 = $712.

There's actually a small window in late October where you can buy this flight from ZIP Air for $625 round trip ... but only if you want to come home after four days.

The SQ deal gets you there and back with free meal service, free drinks (yes, even alcoholic drinks are free in SQ economy class) and a small but realistic baggage allowance.

That's a much better deal if the limited dates work for you.

That's a great deal for someone traveling in the winter on selected dates from southern California

These fares start on June 2 from SFO so not necessarily a fair comparison. SG is a really nice airline tho

It's a good price especially for summer.

Amex offers has $150 back on a $750 purchase with zipair. Could be useful for someone booking a RT or one way in the lie flat seats which start at $927 ow from SFO

I get your point but Spirit isn't a really good comparison, zip air has much better seats and certainly fewer knuckleheads on board. And it's Japanese so you can expect better service in the ground and in the air

The 15 lbs limit is pretty ridiculous as the lightest carry on weighs over 5lbs but I'm curious if they actually check the weight. I've flown volaris a few times with 11kg limit and they've never checked

They check yes. They also got SJC(San Jose) to NRT at similar price. The uber trips from south bay to sfo is super expensive so this direct flight is super welcomed. The food while not free is miles better than typical American airlines

Add about $100-300 in additional fees and taxes such as seat selection, meals, check in bag. Realistically the price will be avg of $500-800 per person one way. Still not a bad price.

I flew with them last month. They're alright and exactly what you'd expect from a budget airline. They didn't weigh my bags flying to or from but my experience might be different than yours. Seats are nice and comfortable on new planes. Bring your own entertainment, you can stream very little content to your device and they have free onboard internet, but I wouldn't count on it loading a news article 80% of the trip. If you don't get the seat upgrade, they will split your party up. Food is optional, you can bring on sandwiches or something on the flight, and onigiri on the flight back or whatever. They have instant noodles on the plane for 500 yen. Spent 650 RT during peak cherry blossom season, so it was a good price. Would fly with them again.

I also have save $150 if you spend $750 or more Amex offer YMMV.
