I did this but it came out really bad (was my first time) used too much sand and the sand didn't roll evenly on an interior staircase

that's exactly what it as stated in the 1st Q&A answer:

This product is basically very clean fine white sand. When mixed with paint, and I suppose varnish, when it dries, it creates an anti-slip gritty surface.

I think in some other similar paint that already had this pre mixed in it was similar to acrylic sand/granules which kept it suspended in the mixture, they do make liquid part thicker as well so it doesn't let it to clump up or settle on the bottom right away.

I've used simliar before to paint the wooden stairs in a snowy area, it does help and it does make a difference. I got my stuff from the paint store and it was basically a baggy of sand-like material. The more you add, the more sandpaper like your paint will get and you don't need a lot.
I think it'll work with clear coat but not wood stain. I think wood stains are too thin and works by being absorbed into the top layers of the wood? This sand stuff has to be painted on and stays on top with the paint holding it in place.
Regular sand might work but I'd imagine that the larger grains of sand will start breaking off if stepped on.

Sand sinks to the bottom of your paint tray. This is pumice, which is lighter, and stays suspended in the paint.

Would this works on ceramic tiles? As painting tiles in any color is not an option, could it be added to some sort of clear coat/paint?
