What was the point of this story? That some people are impatient? I don't get how this is a bad thing. Shipping since pandemic started is crazy.

This tier list seems reasonably up to date: https://ssd.borecraft.com/SSD_Buying_Guide.pdf

That said, you're probably not going to see a meaningful upgrade to an SN850 for awhile (it's still one of the faster Gen 4s though the 850X is a bit faster), and going from an SX8200 Pro to a P5 Plus isn't enough of a jump to really be noticeable unless you have workloads that are super sensitive to storage speed. You'll probably have to wait till fast Gen 5 drives are available to realize any significant difference, and even then you very well might not notice it in day-to-day usage.

One thing I DO ask, people..if I purchase this m.2, will it work on my old PC built in 2015?

For storage, the specs of my old mobo says it has the following...

Here is the link for my motherboard. Gigabyte x99 ud3p [gigabyte.com].
Quote :
Chipset:

1 x M.2 PCIe connector
(Socket 3, M key, type 2260/2280 SATA & PCIe x2/x1 SSD support)
1 x SATA Express connector
6 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors (SATA3 0~5)
Support for RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10
* Only AHCI mode is supported when an M.2 PCIe SSD or a SATA Express device is installed.
(M2_10G, SATA Express, and SATA3 4/5 connectors can only be used one at a time. The SATA3 4/5 connectors will become unavailable when an M.2 SSD is installed in the M2_10G connector.)

Chipset:

4 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors (sSATA3 0~3), supporting IDE and AHCI modes only
(An operating system installed on the SATA3 0~5 connectors cannot be used on the sSATA3 0~3 connectors.)
Does that mean an M.2 drive like this one would work?

$122 at microcenter as well if you need it same day and live near one (although closed today for Easter.). I wonder why prices on nvme are dropping so fast, making room for gen5?

Supply glut of flash memory. It's like dram, peaks and valleys.

That and Samsung overproducing to stay ahead of Micron and Hynix. New tech from them all, so out with the old!

Larger enterprise drives are coming out, dropping the rest below. Used market is dirt cheap for used drives in the server market. But does depend on it's previous use, could have barely had any writes to it over the years, or millions.

Get the SN770 instead. I don't trust Crucial. Both Crucial P2 and SN550 was found to bait and switch to QLC. WD apologized and offered exchange. Crucial said get lost.

Agreed.
1) the WD SN770 is more reliable
2) its also cheaper right now
3) AND the performance is right on par (between the 2 they both win and lose some tests vs each other, but in the end you would really never notice that in average PC usage)
