Came here to see all the snarky comments from the kiddos about so-called "outdated tech" but then realized they're all still sleeping as it's not even noon yet.

I bought this on a $20 sale at Best Buy and it works great. It definitely gets the job done.

great deal! "ultra slim" (9.5mm) drive height (vs. the much older 12.7mm) and fairly easy to crack open, if anyone was wondering about replacing the drive for some reason Smilie

Is that something you've done before?

hahah yes, i can't quite recall but it was back when i had a laptop that still had an optical drive that i wanted to swap, or when i had an external enclosure that i liked better (it was aluminum and had type c) that i was trying to switch it into. i don't have the drive anymore, but if memory serves there's a screw or two under the rubber feet, and then you can just spudger (i don't have one so i just use an old credit card) around the edges to release the clips, like shucking an external hard drive.

edit: WAIT sorry maybe this is the drive where, to get it so slim, they integrated the top cover as the top of the enclosure, so when you remove it you essential get a coverless drive, which isn't great if you're looking to swap out. maybe i should've taken some notes/photos..i went through a few different drives trying to find one i could swap.

Great if you are into earlier pcs. Works great for Windows XP, auto installs drivers. Have a failed IDE drive? Easy peasy lemon squeezy

Stupidly need to buy this. My desktop doesn't even have an optical drive anymore and none of my laptops do. Rather than have to take apart my PC and plug in an old SATA drive this is worth the cost to save me the hassle in the off chance I need to use it.

Same, I think most of us are in that boat now.

I have an external drive with these specs already. Problem is that it's much bigger and requires an external power source (using the same cable as the PCs use). Though I rarely use it, it feels clunky.

I'd rather have something much more slim that doesn't need 2 cables to work. For $14 it is very tempting.

It seems like they should be using similar tech, but why do blu-ray drives cost so much more?
