USB 2.0 is enough. USB 2.0 has 480Mbps max speed, while DVD, even at 24x, is under 270Mbps.

As a side note, many USB 3.0 flash drives also don't really need it.

I agree with this. DVD-R is not very good for long term storage. I heard standard Blu-Ray is better.
But for archival, consider M-Disc which does come in DVD and Blu Ray options. You will need a M-Disc compatible burner, but it can be read with a standard Blu Ray drive (or DVD if you are reading M-Disc DVDs). Cons, the discs are expensive and so is the drive.

My dad used high-quality DVD-R media such as Taiyo Yuden since 2001 on a Panasonic DMR-E20 DVD recorder. To this day, all of those recorded discs still play fine. Of course, they were stored in a climate-controlled environment and away from light.

This $18 LG external DVD-R drive is M-Disc compatible.

See attached.

No. You need the LG Blu-Ray external drive, which is also on sale for $69 at Best Buy.

Oh yeah I remember that, too. Think I have my DC somewhere in storage.
