As a side note, many USB 3.0 flash drives also don't really need it.
But for archival, consider M-Disc which does come in DVD and Blu Ray options. You will need a M-Disc compatible burner, but it can be read with a standard Blu Ray drive (or DVD if you are reading M-Disc DVDs). Cons, the discs are expensive and so is the drive.
This $18 LG external DVD-R drive is M-Disc compatible.

Poor storage, excessive humidity, temperatures, sunlight will shorten lifespan. Much like books, dead sea scrolls, mona lisa, Constitution.
Today's high quality dvd or bluray discs will easily last twenty years+. (By then, you'll want to migrate to newer storage formats.)
Anyways, avoid flash memory - election migration leading to bit failure/loss within a decade. MLC flash fails even faster, years or sooner with elevated temps.

However, I'm not sure what the issue is on your end. Every ~20 year old, non-scratched, burned disc I've tried reads perfectly fine.
I live in Texas so our humidity is low and I've only ever used high quality (ex: Taiyo-Yuden) blanks.
