Yes I know these are about $300 more expensive than late last year, it's probably because of inflation and the IRA.

The Specs shows that they are Energy Star, but AHRI shows that they are not qualified for the $2000 Tax Credit, wierd:

The HEEHRA is not related to the Residential Energy Credit. You could claim both for an installation next year. The HEEHRA is a point of sale rebate program and not a tax credit. It is for low and medium income households only (below 80% or below 150% of Area Median income). It is a very substantial rebate that covers up to 100% of the cost (upto $8000) for low income households and 50% of the costs for a medium income. It is not in place currently as the DOE takes its time figuring out the procedures but expected to be in place by mid 2024.
This is the HEEHRA rebate program. Was passed as part of IRA but the DOE taking its own time in setting guidelines. Expected to be available in mid 2024 and will be a point of sale rebate so you won't have to wait till tax time. https://www.rewiringamerica.org/p...rebate-act
These are the MrCool DIY units, so they are installable without a HVAC contractor to vacuum the lines, etc. The lines come pre-charged with coolant

Just replace the Central AC.
If you require Heat, get a Heat Pump Unit.
The house will be much more comfortable.
And will cost you pretty much the same.

Yup…and there are similar inverter ducted split systems you can buy. I think prob with the same no vac quick connect line sets on some as well. Mr. Cool makes several for example. Might actually be a little quicker and easier install vs 4 mini's. You'd still need to get the old system evac'd before removing it tho. Otherwise, especially if you find one with the same return and supply dimensions so you don't need to do anything with transitions, it's pretty much remove the old, install new air handler in its place, and the rest the same as just the outdoor and line set portion of doing 1 of the minis.

I still question the longevity, parts availability, etc of these cheap inverter systems…but at the same time, $3 or $4k (plus some misc installing it) for 18+ seer heat pump vs the seemingly $10k+ for a traditional pro installed single stage system is some pretty significant saving if you install successfully, even if it ultimately doesn't last quite as long. Another thing to consider is good luck finding a pro to do anything with a self installed system after the fact if it ever has issues. They are out there, but many won't touch them

This is exactly the problem with these. They are finicky and labor intensive. Also you cannot just add refrigerant with mini split as there is no way to measure the amount currently in it so you have to evac and refill. If you overfill without measuring compressor will fail early. I've been doing this for several years and just invested $500 in contractor grade micron gauge, vacumm pump etc. Willing to throw another $500 into a refrigerant recovery machine if needed before I throw in the towel and call a contractor. Next year the IRA low/medium income household rebates kick in and you can get 50-100% covered if you qualify based on income.

Oh, boy, more inflation. Amazing.

Screw people? They owe you nothing. Why in God's name does this country think mechanics of any kind owe people a deal? Do you ever hear of a neighbor of a doctor calling his house and say hey, can you come check out this shoulder pain? He's going to say call the office and we will get you in. There's also the other reasons I named too. You do realize anyone who's ever sold anything marks the price up right?
Car mechanic don't screw people up, ac mechanic do.

We should probably just go back to kings and queens, why should any wealth be given to the peasants?

speaking as King, I usually throw money around to the peasants to keep them from revolting. I figured it cost less than keeping a full time army to suppress them.

Good news is: Mr. Cool's customer service is top notch. I installed one for my in-laws garage conversion. It stopped cooling after almost a year (leak on inside) and the company shipped out a new indoor controller for only shipping fee of $50 asking only for proof of purchase and HVAC technician service call evidence. The bad news is the new unit is starting to spit out ice at night and stops cooling. I searched online and it says it's a possible leak (again) or low refrigerant. Not good considering it's almost summer here in Texas. I might have to install a window unit for them. Not sure if Mr. Cool will stand by it again. BTW, I bought it originally from Amazon. Hope that helps.

I bought 3 Mr cools from home depot, 1 from Amazon. Mr cool answered my questions until they figured out 1 of my units was broken and then they ghosted me. So they will answer all of your questions but if they find out it's broken, good luck. I had to make a claim with home depot for a return refund. Mr Cool wouldn't respond to my calls or emails.

If the price difference is worth your time, buy/return. Really it's a silly game to "price adjust" within 30 days BUT since Costco has basically an infinite return policy (on everything but limited electronics, practically), you can always buy at the current (lower) price and return the higher priced item.

In the past I've had luck going to CS and telling them how stupid such a transaction would be, how it would waste both of our time and effort, and they've done "ghost" buy/return right at the CS desk.

I think they are hardasses about PA's in particular because they might have metric implications for the manager.
Thanks, I let it go this time but I'll keep it in mind if I have a larger $ amount situation in the future

Can you use a 220v outlet splitter to power the 18k unit (208-230V)? Would the MrCool react well (or at least OK) to frequently losing and regaining its power being forced into a low-power mode? (apparently 240v outlet splitters usually send some power to both outlets to run control LEDs and whatnot)

I currently have a 12K BTU Pioneer minisplit in my garage. It doesn't cool well at all. Would a 18K BTU unit be noticeably different or should I just spring for 24K?

Garages are not great because of cement floors and poor insulation at the door. Wouldn't gauge a system based on a garage.
