Please folks, unless you're going to be using tons of Plex or doing heavy gaming, don't scramble to buy ancient hardware that's only discounted by $30 instead of the more frequent $20. If you're just using the normal streaming services, or running IPTV, and a couple of sideloaded on-demand video apps, get yourself either a Onn Box or a Firestick 4k Max for $20 or $35 respectively, and call it a day.

Vote with your wallets that this thing isn't worthy anymore, and needs some notable upgrades. NVIDIA won't bother releasing an updated version if people still fall all over themselves to get these things.

I agree with you 100%, the problem is that there's no way NVIDIA will fab out an entire SBC just for the Shield line. As is with their current product line for this item, they re-used an existing SBC fab from Nintendo's Switch in 2017. We can only hope that Nintendo has plans for a completely new Switch in 2HY23 or sometime in 2HY24, for Nvidia to re-purpose for the Shield product line. Their profitability on this product line from their other offerings is minuscule by comparison, though admittedly their profit margins continue to increase year after year on the same SBC fab from 2017, even though the original Shield came out in 2015 for a slightly older Tegra X1 chipset.

I've been waiting for a new Shield for the last 3 years to come out, and yet to see any drop of news or leaks that would indicate there is even a plan for it. Instead we get action from Nvidia killing the GameStream feature from the Shield, when that was one of the most major touting points of the early Release in 2015 and 2017 revision. I'm going to wait until Q4Y24 to make a decision, yet it's looking like a DIY HTPC might still end up being the better option in the end, or for other ATVs to step up with a more a premium offering to rival Shield in this market sector.

No way I'd ever buy from Newegg again, especially not one of their 3rd party sellers. The last seller I dealt with there was shady as hell and entered fake tracking info after telling me the item they were still selling was out of stock and would be back in 20-30 days. Newegg also seems to protect these sellers by suppressing any negative feedback left. Buyer beware.

It's still the best on the market for plex/emulation. It is old and def needs a refresh but it is still the best alternative. i have shield, roku, fire, and shield is still by far the best if money isn't an issue.

I'm thinking almost any laptop with HDMI and a broken screen off eBay for almost free, hide behind tv, controller of choice and Bluetooth remote on phone. Done.
Was doing this before I bought the 2017 shield and was happy except for occasional resolution issues.
Laptops are way better now.
I bet I'll be thrilled with what I can do for a measly 50-75 bucks.

I was going to go HTPC until someone reminded me Dolby vision doesn't and won't ever work due to licensing on PC

I've actually got one I've never set up. They were coming in and out of stock when I bought it, so I could only get one.

It's just that I like to have matching setups so that my elderly parents don't get confused going from TV to TV. I know it seems like a small thing but, if both boxes are identical, I don't have to do so much tech support 🙂
Maybe I'll start checking at Walmart again for another onn or 2.

You should find them again now if you go looking - they just released a new version. It's not a huge upgrade, but I've seen reports that the minor improvements do make a bit of a difference.

I addressed that use case in my opening sentence. To quote myself "Please folks, unless you're going to be using tons of Plex or doing heavy gaming, don't scramble to buy ancient hardware..."

And yes, if money isn't an issue, and your primary goal is the best Plex experience, you should also be considering the Apple TV. It wins in speed and snappiness, but loses if you need Atmos passthrough, so if you're a hardcore audio enthusiast you would stay with the Shield for now.

I second the Onn box for just about anything streaming from Walmart. Best $10 I ever spent on that thing, runs fast, smooth, and have had no issues.

I have this shield but primarily I only use it for emulation and for that it work great, at current time I dont think I would pay $170 for it thought to do the same tasks.

In short its definitely outdate, its definitely not worth the high price anymore, but yes its still stable and good product.

Shield is also the only box I found that can handle DTS-HD. I too wish there was a competitor in the home theater space.
