Here are the base specs : https://www.techpowerup.com/ssd-s...-1-tb.d667

DRAM could provide a buffer between the computer memory and the drives blocks that are actually written to (TLC) , the controller has a little but 32MB is full really fast.

Problem for me having the same use case for this drive as Orang3Beard is that in a NAS this could be a great replacement for spinning disks, but in RAID it would be just too limited. The real bottleneck is here :
Die Read Speed: 727 MB/s
Die Write Speed: 69 MB/s

With a die write speed of less then 100MB/s this thing could be in continued write much slower then a comparable HDD. Painfully slow to fill up, probably quite decent to retrieve information from.
Found a review that shows with a screenshot what this could look like:
https://m.media-amazon.com/images...L1600_.jpg

Cons:
Reliability seems to be an issue according to some reviews.

Pro's:
Endurance: 450 TBW
Warranty: 3 Years
MTBF: 2.0 Million Hours

For me I would not want to make a ZFS RAIDz2 volume with these. Maybe a normal RAID1 would be cheap peace of mind..
Unless you are refurbishing an old computer for a family member that does not have to work hard daily I believe almost everybody would be helped spending $10-15 more for something better.

Wow. Oh how they have fallen! Keep dropping those prices.

At this rate no reason to have spinners anywhere in the house, save for the NAS.

Yeah it's not a performance beast but it's good enough for most users. Time to upgrade Granny's laptop

this is the way

I agree, a credit is probably the only scenario that makes $ense. I'm not sure how tough that is these days with Amazon - I know it used to be pretty easy in the past, requesting a credit inside a certain timeframe and if the difference wasn't worth the hassle of processing the return. But I know a lot of places have tightened up on that.
i tried to get a credit adjust using the "price is too high" reason for the AMZN return, but Amzn don't care, they'd apparently go through the entire return/repurchase process than to credit $3. I don't understand, but I'm not a Amzn C-suite so WTF do I know?

three bucks pays for my lunch today, so F yah I'm dropping the unopened package off at UPS enroute to work.

Ok this convinced me to finally buy my first (and probably last) SSD. $30 with tax 😊

(wilmer007 this is a general comment for everyone not meant to insult your finances or ability to buy things or anything like that Smilie .. but had some thoughts for you too in case it's of interest?)

If you can afford the additional $14 (no sarcasm intended, with inflation squeezing us all there are cases where you need to count every penny)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078211...RydWU&th=1

(crucial MX500 series of SSD drives, 1 TB, or just search by the model number CT1000MX500SSD1 on amazon if that link doesn't work)

I have three of these running as the C / Windows drive in three different desktop PC's and they've been working great for years now (although of course with m.2 drive prices dropping like crazy too definitely go for that instead if your motherboard supports it )

I would argue they are definitely worth the $14 extra in terms of performance.

Having said that if one has already purchased this PNY drive rather than returning it you could just plug it into your motherboard and use it for storing files as a non Windows drive.

I do have some reservations about this PNY drive based on personal experience as I'm among those disgruntled customers who gave it a negative review (well I didn't get around to giving it a negative review on amazon but still somewhat disgruntled Stick Out Tongue although it definitely falls into the "you get what you pay for" category so that's on me)

Worked fine for maybe a year as a Windows 8 drive then started giving the blue screen of death issue more and more often before finally failing on me completely .. that was the 240 GB model mind you not sure if the 1 TB models are built to better/higher quality standards? And it could be just bad luck maybe someone ordering this will get a drive that's just fine.

I would add the precaution however that if you're using this... or any drive for that matter.. for file storage it's always good to have your files backed up... I've seen external drive on sale frequently mentioned here on slickdeals so maybe grab one of those and make sure you periodically back up files you want to keep onto that external drive and save a copy of Windows on that drive too for that matter

(AOEMI backupper is free although I've heard a lot of great things about Macrium Reflect.. kind of expensive at $70 but from what I hear worth it.. if you can somehow get your hands on the Macrium Reflect 7.0 version I can personally testify that free or no it is great backup software to restore Windows from when and if your Windows installation runs into problems).

I mean i love spinners because it was basically $0.02 per GB for 5400 RPM (for movies) or $0.05 per GB for 7200 RPM (for general use) at 201X prices. but with these falling prices are we suppose to now be buying spinners for less than a penny per GB or are they going to be discontinued?

I don't need SSDs except maybe one for whatever games I'm currently playing and perhaps the OS and would prefer to pay way less for spinners for storing inactive games, movies and everything else.
The only thing that is preventing the death of hard drives are large capacity drives. Who knows, maybe if someone would make 20tb ssd for $800, I am sure that people would bite. Maybe make an 10tb in a 2.5" factor?

Anyone ever pop something like this into a PS4 ?
I did this with an Xbox One. It certainly helps (though not nearly as fast as upgrading to PS5/XSX), but if you don't plan on upgrading then it's worth it for less than $40

It's also the capacity per dollar. Right now a 14 TB USB HDD is around $200. That's a little over $14 per TB. Compare that to this SSD, which is about 2.5x the cost per TB.

SSD's are catching up. But right now, for the same price you can get all of your data on an SSD, or you can get all your data on a pair of HDDs. Meaning one for backups.

If you can still find them they are $26 at many Walmarts and the 500gb version is between $15 and $19

What's dram? Isn't this good price for 1tb?
You want dram for a primary drive out for longevity, it will also perform better. A few of these will be good for basic mass game storage though.

Team group ax2 2tb $72 tlc

Team group Vulcan z gaming 1tb $39 but SLC>TLC

Wrong.
If you look at Q&A of that Amazon VulcanZ:
"Question:
Does this have ecc (error code correction)? is it slc, tlc, or mlc? thank you.
Answer:
Dear Customer,
Yes, VULCAN SSD supports the ECC function.
And it uses 3D TLC NAND flash.

Thank you for being interesting in our product.

If your motherboard has an unused PCIe slot you can get a NVMe to PCI adaptor and just use a 1 TB NVMe drive, instead of one of these SATA 3 SSDs. Even a PCIe 3.0 NVMe will do about 3,300 MB/sec reads and close to 3,000 for writes.

Dram typically used for nvme SSD. I don't think any sata SSD have dram. Like typical RAM, it's used for temporary storage, applicable when writing large files. For SSDs it increases speeds and extends lifetime of the hard drive. Unless you write large files everyday, you won't notice a difference.

I'm good with my 5400 RPM 8 TB Seagate Barracuda Red that I bought at Costco for under $120 years back (I don't think it's even 25% filled up yet). Don't need more than that for SSDs either so $800 for a 20 TB is a big hell no for me. after 10 TB just to lower price per GB is pretty pointless unless your case can't support more drives.

SATA drives can absolutely have DRAM. You may be thinking of HMB which only NVMe drives can have. HMB uses system memory to try and compensate for a lack of on-drive DRAM. Also, DRAM is not used as a write cache, that's what the p-SLC cache is for. DRAM stores a copy of the mapping table (FTL). This is particularly beneficial for mixed I/O, which is the majority of what the average user relies on. I think many people mistakenly flip the benefits of DRAM over DRAM-less with the benefits of NVMe over SATA. DRAM is likely to be beneficial to everyday performance, especially for your OS drive. NVMe is mainly beneficial for cases where people are frequently doing large transfers, which the average user rarely does.
