A lot of weird comments in this thread. This is a semi-auto machine so unlike a Phillips super automatic, this requires manual puck prep. Super automatics make hybrid coffee/espresso with lower pressure than most semi autos. It can mimic espresso but you're unlikely to get a cafe style shot.

Mid-tier machines like this and Breville Baristas offer a mediocre grinder built in. Mediocre grind limits your ability to pull shots with better mouthfeel and you may miss out on some flavor from inconsistent extraction. But grinders can get crazy expensive. As for the espresso part- temp control, temp stability, ability to preinfuse, dual boilers to heat the shot and steam at the same time are some of the things you'll get in higher end machines. A casual user may not need or want these things especially given the price (nicer machines are around $3000).

I think $500 is the sweet spot for getting into espresso machines and you could do much worse than this unit. I currently own a breville barista pro fwiw.

If you search the Amazon reviews for Breville there are some comparisons.

Is this good machine for automatic espresso/lattes <$500? Does it even exists?

I purchased an espresso machine at BB&B a few years back for $129 and it works perfectly. I already had the burr grinder that we use for traditional coffee. I don't understand why this is so much more. What does it do better than my $129 machine? What's automatic about it? You still manually tamp your grinds, still manually froth the milk/cream. What makes it so much better than this? https://www.kohls.com/product/prd...p?prdPV=16 The only thing missing is the burr grinder.

There is definitely diminishing returns with espresso machines but the build quality and quality of the shot is better with better machines. I've personally tried the Cuisinart machine and was overall disappointed with the shots it pulled.

Cost is comparable to all the money I spend on espresso in about 5 years...including espresso machine, grinder, coffee and all accessories. We drink 5 espresso a day on average.

I've had a breville bambino plus barely for 3 years and it broke down. There's some leaks inside the machine tripping my GFCI outlet when I try to turn on. It had only 2 year warranty. Apparently this issue is common. I am upset because they seem to use internal components that don't last long but long enough that they're not on the hook. This is not top notch by any means.
