What does bookshelf vs tower speaker have to do with how much they cost?? Sure the tower speakers in the same series will be more expensive than the bookshelf, but $1.4K isn't even that much money for good quality speakers.
It's quality vs quantity and KEF make some of the best speakers in the world and the R series is one of their top series under the Reference line. I'll take a KEF bookshelf ahead of most towers any day of the week.
I'm just happy to see quality speakers being listed on Slickdeals for once instead of all the Klipsch and other junk brands you usually see around here...
1500$ for bookshelf speaker? almost as much as tower speaker? I don't know much about this stuff but what can be possibly so good about bookshelf speaker at a price of fairly good quality complete 5.2 setup including good receiver?

I'd love to hear these and the LS50s side by side, especially at this price. I'm guessing these would have a slight edge. Regardless, these with a decent sub would make a remarkably good system that could excel in everything from home theater to critical listening.
Why ? How are they better? They sound better or louder or what
A lot of it is honestly preference from what I've gathered. "Expensive" speakers are regarded for specific qualities like "soundstage," and having a flat/neutral response curve (which from what I have gathered also is usually correctible from EQ and room correction with quality receivers). From what I've gathered, this mostly matters from people being very discerning and mainly pertains to critical music listening. If you are doing mostly HT and gaming I would say your returns diminish more rapidly. I am in the processing of purchasing a set of R's, but this was based on wife preference for aesthetics in our living room vs alternatives. I honestly don't expect them to perform drastically differently than the ugly JBL's they are replacing from a slickdeal 5 years ago....
Also reps as I just bought the R2C- going to return and rebuy since they are too stupid to price match open box that I received last week-- guess they'd rather ship twice.

In case you missed it, the bookshelf is for the pair, while the tower is each.

They will have way more bass extension, but the R3 are nice because its a true 3 way design, because the midrange is 5" and crossed at 2.9khz and then the woofer is 6.5" crossed at 400hz, as opposed to the Q550 which is basically just a regular 2 way with a bunch of extra woofers.

Pretty sure the Kef R3 are part of the Meta line/series. Edit. Upon research I guess there are two different versions. These and the Meta. Wonder how much different they are ?

You are correct but i doubt these are the meta version, likely the older nonmeta.
The list on the meta are 2200 and if this were the meta it would be an excellent deal.
The R3s are great speakers, one of the best measuing bookshelf ever. Check out their review at ASR
