Don't listen to that guy telling you to buy a MacBook AND iPad.... He's clearly loaded with money; this laptop is fine for college.
The reason the college guy is asking about these computers is cause he's on a budget. If you have the budget for a mac or ipad, you can get much, much better hardware for the same price. Apple products are like designer brand products.
The thing is that nowadays you can find refurbished/used M1 MacBook Air for 600/700; and the iPad 10.2 for 250. Even when together is not much difference from an LG Gram, and you can't end up with 2 very powerful devices, and together with maybe triple the battery life, and more
Versatile to the needs of a college student.

Looking to get a light and long-lasting laptop for college, is this a good deal or should I get a MacBook?

Got the 16in 16Z90Q in a previous deal - its for my daughter who is going to college. She loves it. It has an awesome matte screen and great battery life. The 2-in-1 is heavier and has a reflective glossy screen.

Get an M1 MacBook Air. Battery life on them is insane and they're always on sale for around $800. Plus it'll be supported for years and it's super lightweight.

College wise, weight matter, and with that LG is king.

If you or the student is a dropper though, pick something else like Dell that can take a pounding. MacBook can take a pounding too but hurts a lot more (psychologically) due the price you paid for it.

Lenovo is a good balance between build and weight though.

Personally would pick LG though, if you're a programmer or an aspiring one, that big screen will do wonders for you and the weight feels lighter than notebook, you'll question if it's in your backpack as you walk from class to class.

If you're looking for an lg 17 I'd go with Costco's config. Priced just as well, it's brand new, and has the Costco warranty

Can you tell me the brands of windows laptop that overheat ? Last I checked windows OS desktop still holds a hefty 60% market share.

I got the 14inch LG Gram in a previous deal (just a month ago) from Buydig.
It is great.
Very light and the battery life is amazing too.
While you are not looking at the 14inch, I would assume these to be equally great.
