Starting to see more of that right now. Money is tight and Needs vs. Wants are starting to become the reality of many people.

In the last recession, I picked up a lot of Lego (and other collectibles) on the cheap.

As it shows on the box, you can build all 3 cars (not at the same time). Those are the different parts for the different versions (along with some Doc/Marty associated items).

What is all the stuff outside of the car? Serious question. Does it eventually end up in the car? Or just a bunch of add ons that will lay around after this is completed? Thanks.

The hoverboard and plutonium go in the car under the hood. The remaining extra pieces are for building the different models for the three movie variants. So, some end up on the car and some don't depending on which one you want to build.
