I sold my more expensive, quieter, enclosed inverter Champion generator because it overheated a few times during Ida. It also had a much smaller fuel tank. I bought the Cabelas version of this unit (has the LED "load meter" feature that I really like). Compared to my enclosed frame, electric start Champion unit that I used for a week after Ida, I like this unit much more due to the open frame design (runs cooler) and the MUCH larger fuel tank - like 2X the size. Same engine and inverter board in both.

If using one of these for camping, have mercy on your neighbors and get enclosed. It really is noticeably quieter - ive owned both. But if you are living off a generator for days after a storm, you really want one the runs cooler and has a larger fuel tank. Noise is not as much concern because everybody is running a generator in this situation. And even though open frame it really isn't all that loud - much quieter than the cheapo non-inverter units.

This style Champion inverter is the PERFECT generator for those needing backup storm power. For the money it is an insane value.

Newbies: Inverter technology is great, open frame is going to be on the noisy side so if you can, go for something "closed" like Champion Power Equipment 200987 4500-Watt RV Ready Portable Inverter Generator, Wireless Remote Start

I picked this unit up for $725 last summer so they do go on sale...its very quiet, you can stand next to it and have a conversation easily

You can't even buy a high quality 4000w inverter for this price, what's the catch with these things that they include not just an inverter but a generator for less?

I suppose, I wish someone would quantify the difference between a Honda (high price), Generac (Mid price) and these low cost ones to see what the actual differences are. I'm guessing realiability is one but I would expect the electricity produced by these cheap units to not be as stabile.

The noise level really depends on the distance and where you are. 64 dBA isn't very bad if it's 30 feet. The weight concerns me more than the noise level though.
