It's way better than a Chromebook. Make sure you modify the power limit and graphics settings in bios (watch ETA Prime youtube vid) to double the performance. You can't beat this value for the cpu and 16gb (soldered) ram and 500gb m2 ssd. Free upgrade to Win11. Limited bloatware. Refurbished units pop up on walmart for ~$260 of the 14" model.
I bought the 15" model last October for $300 (has numeric keypad), works great. The webcam is poor quality. Speakers are okay. The screen is a decent ips (no issues with it falling out like some reported in previous deal threads). They keyboard is nothing special. A tad heavy but it uses metal/limited plastic so build quality is average. The battery only lasts ~3hrs unplugged w battery saver browsing web/watching youtube/movies.
It has older wifi 5 & bt 5. One thing I noticed though is my HDMI output can only do 4k at 30fps, not 60fps so not really watchable. 1080p HD looks fine hooking up to TV though. I'm not sure about the usb-c output resolution.
It has a hatch in the back to add a backup m2 ssd drive (Leven JM600 1tb $40 off amazon).
Same price during Christmas season, several times. I bought in December & am pleased. Of note, problems w/ fingerprint reader was mentioned by several people & I affirm that. Repped.

Had the refurb of this for a while. Stout processor, good sized SSD, and enough RAM to open up plenty of tabs without grinding to a halt. Not perfect, but for the cash, I've been super happy. Build quality is not IBM Thinkpad, sure, and there are shortcuts taken (the power connector is also iffy and i worry that it would break easily) but overall a good deal!

I bought 2 about 9 months ago back when they were $250 at Walmart. First one had a damaged screen from shipping. Returned it and got another one no hassle. NO complaints with the quality or speed of these. I use one just for general stuff and my gf uses hers for her crafts with her cricket machine and whatnot. Won't find anything better for under $300! If you're that worried about buying a Gateway then spend the extra money on the insurance or hop off the post. Ridiculous bringing up the brand. Go spend $1000 on your Mac and move on 👍🏼
***Would also like to add that for $20-$30 you can add a 3 year warranty for these through Walmart***

Instead I bought dell refurbished 7300 touch with older i7 , 16gb and 512gb ssd for around $209. So far so good.
They keep coming up on slick deals every now and then.
I got the same grade A for a bit more. Upgraded to 32GB once I realized it was only as single stick inside!
Did your 7300 come with a web cam privacy slide? Mine didn't. I have the touch version

Had one for about 2 years. After a year, the glue that held the screen came apart and the hinges started breaking off. Performed pretty well, but has a horrible build. Invest your money into something better.

Paid $330 for refurbished a year and a half ago. Great value, but build quality is pretty bad. It doesn't bother me personally, but it creaks and bends like a toy. My motherboard just went out a couple days ago, but it sounds like I may be the outlier in that regard (sounds like most folks reporting motherboard failure are within the first month, i.e. during the warranty period). Not terribly dissatisfied for what I ultimately considered a throw away machine.

Me too. Never high on Dell and never owned one but got two of them and they were so much better configured than these Gateways. Great deal for the price.
I got a couple of these for 249 in July. I've been very pleased. I did short one out by wiping the keyboard down, but I got gateway to cover it. They ended up giving me a new machine. So I'm pleased with the support. For the money, I don't think you can beat it.

Same happened to me with a Lenovo laptop. I think the 15inch screens put more stress on screen and hinges. So I've decided to stay at 14 inch.
what laptop would people recommend for ~<$350? Refurb is perfectly fine. I don't want to play games, just want a decently fast, modern machine with preferably backlit keys and good build quality, and prefer 15.6" as long as its not too bulky. I will run both WIndows and Linux.
I've been considering older used Thinkpads which will have a great build quality but wondering if I can get a newer 11th/12th gen Intel or Ryzen for same price.
e.g. there's this Gateway, theres a Sony Vaio FE15 for about the same price at Walmart and I'm sure both are made by same oem now, and older Thinkpad T480/T15 etc.

Given that it's still very snappy. Have 2 of them and work just fine.
