Are Gateways still a crappy brand, or did they improve their quality after the acquisition?
They were on par with HP and Dell before now it's just chinese garbage under the gateway name.

Video cards in these garbage laptops never manage thermals well.

what laptop would people recommend for ~<$350? Refurb is perfectly fine. I don't want to play games, just want a decently fast, modern machine with preferably backlit keys and good build quality, and prefer 15.6" as long as its not too bulky. I will run both WIndows and Linux.

I've been considering older used Thinkpads which will have a great build quality but wondering if I can get a newer 11th/12th gen Intel or Ryzen for same price.

e.g. there's this Gateway, theres a Sony Vaio FE15 for about the same price at Walmart and I'm sure both are made by same oem now, and older Thinkpad T480/T15 etc.
Personally, if you are looking for the same specs, without the drawbacks, I would go with this from Back Market: Dell Latitude E5400 14-inch (2019) - Core i5-8365U - 16 GB - SSD 256 GB (Refurbished - Top Grade) for $209. (Smaller SSD, but you can grab a 1TB NVME drive and enclosure for the difference in price). Excellent machine for the money!! https://www.backmarket.com/en-us/...1d585#l=10

That is true, just be nice to take some heat off the CPU, but you nailed it, thermals and ventilation.

This GW doesnt come with an auto shut off. Only a few premium laptop have auto battery health. you have charge them like a telsa.

If you keep it charged 30-80% the battery will last 5 years or more.
I installed a battery app to remind me to unplug after 80% state of charge.
My acer swollen after 10 years. My other laptop, battery health still around 80% health after 8 years.

Overnight charge or drain from 100% to 0% will kill the battery in 1-2 years like all laptops.

I suggest you contact gw for battery parts or find them on ebay, The maker is EVOO
Teslas have auto shut off. you can set it anywhere from 50 to 100%. I wish more devices had that ability though. You can also set the charge rate with a Tesla, which would also be nice if other devices supported that. I don't need to quick charge my phone if it is going to be plugged in all night

Mainly use it for web browsing, emails, storing files.

You give terrible, ignorant, advice. Stop blathering when you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Latitudes have been trash until 2021 models where they fixed the solid plastic crap. And Intel 8th Gen is very very very old and sliggish at this point.
I asked for advice, I didnt give any. Maybe you should calm down and not insult others.
