It's way better than a Chromebook. Make sure you modify the power limit and graphics settings in bios (watch ETA Prime youtube vid) to double the performance. You can't beat this value for the cpu and 16gb (soldered) ram and 500gb m2 ssd. Free upgrade to Win11. Limited bloatware. Refurbished units pop up on walmart for ~$260 of the 14" model.
I bought the 15" model last October for $300 (has numeric keypad), works great. The webcam is poor quality. Speakers are okay. The screen is a decent ips (no issues with it falling out like some reported in previous deal threads). They keyboard is nothing special. A tad heavy but it uses metal/limited plastic so build quality is average. The battery only lasts ~3hrs unplugged w battery saver browsing web/watching youtube/movies.
It has older wifi 5 & bt 5. One thing I noticed though is my HDMI output can only do 4k at 30fps, not 60fps so not really watchable. 1080p HD looks fine hooking up to TV though. I'm not sure about the usb-c output resolution.
It has a hatch in the back to add a backup m2 ssd drive (Leven JM600 1tb $40 off amazon).
Same price during Christmas season, several times. I bought in December & am pleased. Of note, problems w/ fingerprint reader was mentioned by several people & I affirm that. Repped.

The left edge of that shift key is in the correct place. It's missing 1/4 or so part of the right side. I naturally finds it just fine. I did a test trying to reach the missing part and my index finger moved away from the J Key. So using the missing part of the right shift key could slow down my typing. So I never use it and it's not an issue for me.
But depending on how you type, you may have problem with it.
Many of the mechanical typewriters also have smaller right shift keys and a larger left shift keys.
What's more important though is it has the HOME and END keys where on the Dell XPS-15, I'd need to use FN+HOME and FN+END. The HOME and END keys are used very often when writing/editing tech documents.
I rather type on this than the Lenovo Ideapad 3 14" where there're no dedicated PageUp, PageDown, HOME, and END keys. You'd need to do two key combos to get them. Sucks to read/write/edit docs.

I tried to download the audio from gateway site but said download failed, no file. Can you explain how you did it or send the file to me thanks in advance.

I just did a fresh install of Windows 11 using a USB created with the above link. Yay, no more bloatware. Some tips
This laptop seems to lack the F12 (on power up) to get into the boot menu so you need to go into the BIOS Boot page and disable the internal boot SSD so you can boot from the USB Drive
The track pad does not work with the WIndows installer. You can either use a USB mouse or use the TAB key like I did. Press TAB to move between selections. Enter or Space Bar to "click" the selection.
After booted into Windows, press WINDOW Key, type "windows update" and select "Check WIndows Updates" and afterwards, the trackpad will work
I don't know if I'm imagining this, but speakers sound low with the default Windows install. They get louder after I installed the Audio driver from gatewayusa.com
I tried to download the audio from gateway site but said download failed, no file. Can you explain how you did it or send the file to me thanks in advance.
I know some of the files, like serialio, have empty links. But audio is there.
Here's the direct link: gatewayusa.com/GatewayDrivers/win11/GWTN141-10/Audio.zip
Did you do a fresh install of Windows 11 from Microsoft? If so, let us know if the volume did indeed go louder after installing the audio driver from Gateway please.
If you still having problems with the file, then it maybe your browser setting preventing you from doing it. Let us know.

Thanks for the direct link I was able to download it from that but when i tried to update drivers it said i already have the latest one. Upon receiving my refurb unit I did a Windows update & some Windows 10 updates it offered me Windows 11 upgrade so I proceeded. No fresh install because I only have basic computer skills & didn't want to start from scratch. I the previous Gateway 15.5" model with previous intel i5 10 gen chip but basically same specs as the 14" model. That older one the speakers are really low, the new one is a lot louder. For some reason the gateway support links do not work on both Gateways & I even tried on a chromebook to download. Can you please send me the direct link to the GWTN156-1 Audio driver so I can try with my other one. Thanks

If your refurb 14" came with Windows 10 customized by Gateway and then you upgraded to Windows 11 within the Windows 10 OS, then you probably got the Gateway customized version of Windows 11 with all the usual bloatwares and in that case, it'd make sense if the audio driver is already at the latest version. In my case, I did a complete fresh install of the standard Microsoft Windows 11 (I do that to all the laptops I buy) , did a complete WIndows Update and found the sound was really low. So I run the Gateway audio driver update and it first un-installed the realtek driver that came with standard version of Windows 11, restarted, and installed the audio driver from Gateway and the sound got louder.
The only drivers I see for GWTN156-1 are for Windows 10 and the link to the audio driver is empty so I can't help you there. Best to contact Gateway support.
Is this better then the dell 7400 refurbished that's been posted?
In most ways, yes. The Dell may have better build quality, but it's second hand. These have newer processors, more/faster ram, more storage, etc, while also being new.

Also see if there's a "Realtek Audio Console" app installed. Hit WINDOWS Key, type "realtek" and select "Realtek Audio Console". There you can play around with the equalizer for the speakers. I created a preset named MAX with all sliders turned to max and that made it even slightly louder. There's also an "Omni Speaker" option you can turn on to make it even louder. Not sure if sound quality goes down with those settings though.
Thanks for advise. Probably going to use the 14' more Unfortunately the 15.6' has developed battery bulge & now the plastic below the arrow keys has cracked. The plastic on the keyboard side always had lots of flex so the plastic has actually cracked top and bottom so it is what it is. Had it for 2 years . Good thing the 14" has no flex since it's smaller.

The 14" could benefit from the EQ hack too.
I wonder how common are battery bulge on laptops. My Dell XPS-15 (2012) was still perfect 'till 2021 aside from the screen peeling off a little on the right edge, but I only use it on vacations so that's no more than 3-4 weeks per year. I have a Xiaomi 10K mAh power bank that has this problem after only a few uses.
I guess time will tell how well this one will hold up.
Had the refurb of this for a while. Stout processor, good sized SSD, and enough RAM to open up plenty of tabs without grinding to a halt. Not perfect, but for the cash, I've been super happy. Build quality is not IBM Thinkpad, sure, and there are shortcuts taken (the power connector is also iffy and i worry that it would break easily) but overall a good deal!
My current work laptop is a Thinkpad and it's a POS.
I was one of the first to get one, others still had HP.
Now, they're rotating their leases out to Thinkpads, experiencing the same lockups and crashes.
The glory days of Thinkpads are long gone.
Mine does. Display, charging and USB inputs. I don't even need the power brick, it's a single cable to hook to my whole desktop setup.

Yup. Works just fine on mine, too. As long as you don't expect too much, it's a nice laptop for the price.

For real? So it has thunderbolt, kinda? It says it has a usb c but doesn't says what kind.
In the market for a usb-c brick that will output video to another monitor via display port or vga. Have you already tried this with your external brick? I would like to run two external monitor. One is currently using the onboard HDMI port.
I was unsure if this laptop (which I already have) would be able to display out of the usc-c port with an external brick. What is a good external brick? I saw some mentioning Dell.

Are you looking for a docking station or just an adapter?
Dell makes a USB-C to HDMI and a USB-C to HDMI+DP adapter. Those should work. I have the HDMI one at home and I will test it when I get home next week.

Docking station is another story. They're expensive. Dell makes a USB-C and a TB docking station. I've used the TB version with a Dell Precision laptop at work. It has its own power supply and runs its own software internally. Most likely the TB version will not work since I don't think the Gateway has TB. Not sure about the USB-C version. I took the laptop home every night and one time while connecting or disconnecting the usb-c, something in the laptop blew up then the dock stops working in any usb-c port. Funny enough, the USB-C to HDMI adapter still works. IMO, the thick cables in these docks assert more force on the ports when things don't line up properly. And the ports on these Precision laptops are too loosey goosey.

Eq hack worked on my 15.6" , a bit distorted on max volume so I'll keep it in the middle. Don't know if I'll do it on the 14", sound is adequate maybe set it at 75% eq.

Given that it's still very snappy. Have 2 of them and work just fine.
