almost tempted to get one of these but i saw an HP with the following specs at HP website for $319

HP Laptop 17z-cp200, 17.3"
Windows 11 Home
AMD Athlon™ Gold 7220U (up to 3.7 GHz, 4 MB L3 cache, 2 cores, 4 threads) + AMD Radeon™ Graphics + 8 GB Memory(OB)128 GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD

I only need for browsing web and excel spread sheets and I like the larger screen size (17").

Compared to Gateway machine (14"/windows 10/16G RAM) is the HP worth an extra $40? (17"/windows 11/8G RAM)

Good price for a everyday general laptop. Just clean up bloatware and debloat it a bit and should be golden.
mind sharing how?

Anyone here tried connecting an external monitor to this laptop via USB-C? Notebookcheck's review of the laptop says the USB-C port supports displayport out but apparently their unit had some issues with it.

How is the fan noise on your unit? Do you get any high pitched sounds? The sound profile on mine is like a jet engine taking off but at a much quieter sound level.
honestly didn't notice. my wife is using it now, she would tell me if it was loud.

This might seem like a silly question but to those that know specs better than me.
I made the switch from windows to Mac (after 30 years) and am enjoying my Air. I was going to sell my old XPS13 9360. Then I thought it might make more send to give my son a laptop for his own use (been on an iPad to date).
Should I sell the XPS and get this or just give him the XPS?

Any opinions appreciated.

Depends on if you need a 17" screen or not (and the quality of said screen). Chances are if you do, you will also likely want more than 8gb RAM to go with it.. Without checking any benchmarks/comparisons, I have to assume the Athlon Gold vs an i5 11th gen is going to heavily favor the i5. The Gateway also has a 512gb SSD (versus 128) which is significantly larger.

So for $40 you are paying for the HP name, build, support and a big screen. Not saying it's not worth it for peace of mind, but spec-wise they aren't really comparable.

edit: HP site has this listed for the screen: 17.3" diagonal, HD+ (1600 x 900), BrightView, 250 nits

I would sell it (if you can, that is pretty old), and put the funds toward this. Your XPS has better build quality but the components are dated. This is a great laptop for a kid.

Half a year ago this is a good price. Now, not so much. 12th gen has been decreasing in price and AMD 6000 has been more readily available.

An $300 i3 1215U laptop would be better for general use except for gaming compared to this.

This needs to go down to $250. (11th gen is now more than 2 years old)
Show me a reasonably priced 6000 series laptop.

Anyone else mess with the TDP settings in the bios? I set it to 28000 per the cpu spec.

Just got mine, works with dual external monitors (one through HDMI, the other through USB-C). For the price, it's an excellent option. Bought it with three year warranty and came out to $362 all told.
