It's way better than a Chromebook. Make sure you modify the power limit and graphics settings in bios (watch ETA Prime youtube vid) to double the performance. You can't beat this value for the cpu and 16gb (soldered) ram and 500gb m2 ssd. Free upgrade to Win11. Limited bloatware. Refurbished units pop up on walmart for ~$260 of the 14" model.
I bought the 15" model last October for $300 (has numeric keypad), works great. The webcam is poor quality. Speakers are okay. The screen is a decent ips (no issues with it falling out like some reported in previous deal threads). They keyboard is nothing special. A tad heavy but it uses metal/limited plastic so build quality is average. The battery only lasts ~3hrs unplugged w battery saver browsing web/watching youtube/movies.
It has older wifi 5 & bt 5. One thing I noticed though is my HDMI output can only do 4k at 30fps, not 60fps so not really watchable. 1080p HD looks fine hooking up to TV though. I'm not sure about the usb-c output resolution.
It has a hatch in the back to add a backup m2 ssd drive (Leven JM600 1tb $40 off amazon).
Same price during Christmas season, several times. I bought in December & am pleased. Of note, problems w/ fingerprint reader was mentioned by several people & I affirm that. Repped.

I bought three of these in the last year. One is my daily driver. One is my wife's. And another is our dedicated Plex server. No complaints. No regrets.
If anyone compares this with chromebook I'd say get your facts straight. Chromebook is more powerful these days but has a rigged end of life schedule by google chrome. It is between 5-8 years. By the time you get a good deal off old chromebook it should have about a year or two left. Now if u are in the market for a Gateway computer u will probably use it for low performance low wattage function wayy past 8 years. Or at least not plan an expiry date on your purchase.
one nice thing about some chromebooks (you'd have to check specific models) is that you can install linux on it after the end of life.
that said, not everyone wants to use linux, but it is an option and works perfect for tasks done on these types of low end laptops
I bought 2 about 9 months ago back when they were $250 at Walmart. First one had a damaged screen from shipping. Returned it and got another one no hassle. NO complaints with the quality or speed of these. I use one just for general stuff and my gf uses hers for her crafts with her cricket machine and whatnot. Won't find anything better for under $300! If you're that worried about buying a Gateway then spend the extra money on the insurance or hop off the post. Ridiculous bringing up the brand. Go spend $1000 on your Mac and move on 👍🏼

I just did a fresh install of Windows 11 using a USB created with the above link. Yay, no more bloatware. Some tips
This laptop seems to lack the F12 (on power up) to get into the boot menu so you need to go into the BIOS Boot page and disable the internal boot SSD so you can boot from the USB Drive
The track pad does not work with the WIndows installer. You can either use a USB mouse or use the TAB key like I did. Press TAB to move between selections. Enter or Space Bar to "click" the selection.
After booted into Windows, press WINDOW Key, type "windows update" and select "Check WIndows Updates" and afterwards, the trackpad will work
I don't know if I'm imagining this, but speakers sound low with the default Windows install. They get louder after I installed the Audio driver from gatewayusa.com

I was able to do a fresh install out of the box with windoze 11 and installed drivers from gatewayusa.com. Windows is activated automatically. Thanks everyone for contributions with tips.

Mine came with Windows 11 already installed. First thing I did was go thru all the Windows Updates to complete. Use it for a few days. Then did a fresh install of Windows 11. I do recommend doing it this way just in case there's a BIOS update for the laptop that needed to be installed and you probably will get that thru the Gateway Windows 10/11. I don't know if you will get a BIOS update thru the regular MS Windows 11. Regular MS Windows 11 did prompt me to update my BIOS on a desktop pc that I built, but I'm not sure if it will do the same with this Gateway. Gateway doesn't list a BIOS file for this laptop. Maybe we should ask them for one.

I used "mrchromebox" on an old Chromebook. If I'm not mistaken, this works on very few new Chromebooks? I have a 17" Asus N4500 Chromebook that I sort of would like to do this on because I'm not a fan of Google, not sure it would work on this one though. It has 7 full years left of updates which is great, but I don't think they have much of a resale value so I'm sort of stuck with it...........
No keys are needed for re-installation of Windows 10/11 if the computer is already activated. During the first activation, a HASH is calculated using, as input, attributes of the motherboard and BIOs (there maybe more input, but not sure) and this HASH is stored in an online activation server. During installation, the HASH is looked up from the server and if it's found, then Windows is activated automatically.
You can check the activation status by hitting WINDOWS Key, type 'windows activ' and select 'see if windows is activated'
Is this activated at the factory or during customer's ownership? I have a new laptop that I haven't used yet--I'd like to install Linux without ever looking at W11--would W11 license still be there if I ever sold it or needed W11 and didn't activate it myself? Thanks.

I don't have detail knowledge of this process, I'm just guessing here. There's home activation and OEM activation. Home activation is when you buy a product key for your DIY PC and when you enter that product key the first time
The product key and other info are programmed to the BIOS
info is sent to MS servers.
Given you never need to enter the product key with new PCs anymore, my guess is that Steps 1 and 2 above are already done at the factory. But not sure if you need to boot up with Windows that came with the laptop to make it "official". You should post a question on stackoverflow.com
I wonder why you don't want to boot into Windows at least one time? If I remember correctly, the Linux installer includes GParted and you can run that to delete all the partitions created by Windows. Essentially giving you a fresh drive. I mean even if you don't boot into Windows, those partitions already exist before you turn on the PC.
