For anyone wondering, I calculated the RPM and m/s of both saws, since EGO is so kind as to give different measurements for the 16" (20m/s) and the 18" (11,000rpm).

The 16" saw has a chain speed of 20m/s which calculates out to a motor RPM of 12,114.
The 18" saw has an (motor) RPM of 11,000 which calculates out to a chain speed of 18.16m/s.

I think I used the wrong chain pitch in my original calculations (0.325" instead of 0.375"). Correcting that ends up being:

11,000 RPM and 20.95m/s for the 18"
20m/s and 10,499 RPM for the 16".

Seems more accurate, especially since the 16" is almost 10,500 RPM which seems like something they would spec. That's what I get for researching and doing calculations while I'm supposed to be sleeping.

I also bought this kit at $249 last year. It's awesome, but don't pretend that it matches a gas powered chainsaw.

Also worth nothing, using a lower rated battery (ie 2.5 Ah vs 5Ah) doesn't just affect the duration of usage, it also affects the maximum output, at least with regards to this chainsaw. Meaning, if you used both a fully charged 2.5Ah and a fully charged 5Ah battery, not only will the 2.5Ah battery run out faster, but it will also bog down under a lighter load than the 5Ah will.

The 16 is more than enough, I have the 18 and almost always reach for the 16. It's lighter and seems to have more oomph. Also 16" chains are slightly cheaper than 18".

Weird, I just bought some generic EGO batteries to try out and figured I would see what the price was on the chainsaw. I saw this on Amazon and came here to see if it was a decent price, and I guess this was the cheapest its been in awhile! The generic 5AH battery I bought was $110. I feel like I should return the generic batteries I bought and just buy another chainsaw set.

Great price, I paid $240 for this kit last year. This is one of, if not the best, battery powered chainsaws out there.

It is great but the 4 amp battery can go quick. I have a couple 5 amps from others to rotate and I can keep going for hours on our hard as hell oaks. Maybe not a complete gas replacement but damn near as close as I've seen.

The reason I haven't gone for ego yet is I keep seeing this same thing... Basically people just keep buying tools with batteries since the batteries are so overpriced. I understand selling them may make it a slicker deal but it's still more on your to do list.

As someone who has only borrowed a chainsaw when needed, but would like to get one for those occasions (and the extra battery for my other tools), will the 16" be plenty or will I end up regretting not getting the 18"? I rarely ever cut actual trees or large limbs and if the 18" is always going to need a bigger demand for even the smaller cuts, I'm thinking the 16" is fine?

16" is plenty. Remember that you'll be able to cut both sides of any tree/limb so think of it as being able to cut a 32' tree. From BluePocket413 calculations I wonder if its the same motor with a longer bar/chain so it's producing less as you go longer.

You should probably just buy a real gas chainsaw so you aren't rebuying new sets just for batteries.😭😭
