I usually get Merrells - can anyone comment on the difference between the fit of Merrells vrs Saucony and the durability?
I have these sauconys in crazy gold. Using them for gym shoes for about a year. Holding up great in that use case. Some of the best fitting sneakers I've had in a while. I'll be buying these black ones just to have another pair

Trail running shoes like these are meant for outdoor. Road running shoes and trainers are more appropriate for the gym.

Lol, what ever "meant" means. Usually main difference is sole tread that is not flat and would have more grip on loose surface. Some have stronger materials to resist more wear from rocks etc. Because of that most trail running shoes are a little heavier than road running shoes.
I have mostly trail running shoes for running (trail or not), hiking and everyday use. If they fit right and are comfortable you CAN use them pretty much anywhere without any downsides. Obviously if you are Olympic runner then 3oz you save with very expensive running shoes might be worth it.
Anyhow thank you for sharing your absolutely unnecessary opinion that no one asked for. He said he loves the shoes and it works great for gym for him - why would you have to tall him he is wrong if it works great for him?
Size is good. I have the black in 12.5. my regular shoe is a new balance 880v10 in 12.5. these are a LITTLE more narrow on my left foot at first, but broke in after 3 hikes lasting 2miles each or so. I did use thicker socks, darn tough hiker micro crew. I also use compression sleeves for my ankles to add stability as my ankles roll easily. The thicker socks + skin tight ankle compression sleeves in 12.5...great fitting shoe. No ankle/heel rub due to my compression sleeve, otherwise there is some heel rub.
Grip on the trail is very good. I also have topo ultraventure 2 boots which also have great grip. So far no issues on rock, plank wood, sand, roots, steep up and down inclines meant for mount bikes (we hike on mountain bike trails because that's what we have around here.) No issues with grip, you'll like it.
Critiques- Laces could be longer. This seems to be a recurring issue with modern generation of shoes. New balance same thing. Heel rub. Use the mole skin tape on youre heels or wear skin tight, "padded" hiking socks. or maybe the the shoe just fits perfectly and you don't need any of that.
I highly recommend these at this price. Can't go wrong for trail shoes if they fit! My SO also has these but 2 years old, and they have held up great with about 50-60 miles of trails.
last tip: If the toe box height seems short, take out the insoles and swap for thinner ones. Default ones are meant to add comfort and are thicker than usual.
I ran trails frequently about a decade ago and these were always one of the higher rated trail shoes when researching. Does any one with experience know if this is still a good shoe?
The tread pattern and stability was what really stood out to me on mine, really considering buying some more.
Not sure about trail running, but Peregrines have been my goto yard shoe for years. I live on a hill and these make mowing and just yard work in general so much easier due to the aggressive tread pattern.
Sierra has had these for $50 +shipping for months, although sizes may be limited at this point.
Peregrines are good trail shoes. I went half a size up with my last 11's to allow for thick socks, but probably didn't need to since they're already a bit roomier than my Saucony road shoes. The biggest "complaint" I see people have is that they're a bit firm, but it didn't bother me on trails. If you're on really firm surfaces or routinely going on really long runs something like the Xodus ultra might be a better choice.

I am not sure.. Reviews do look good, but anyone have any thoughts on these?

Great career choice being the head of the shoe police. Your family must be SO proud of you
