1TB is only $34.99....not bad either
Thanks for clearing that up Teamgroup, now I know the exact differences in your models.

And the Advanced AX2 (silver + orange) is made exclusively for amazon to sell, and the Elite EX2 (silver + blue) is not exclusive and is up to 550 read vs 540... and the difference in the guts of these models is... what exactly?

I have a few teamgroup SSDs, all work great, but damn comparing the specs on their models is just silly. They do have a comparison function on their site that is... well useless.

SSDs are dirt cheap now. What happened?
It's a similar story as the chip market more generally. During the pandemic, companies ordered as much chip inventory as they could, for fear that they wouldn't get enough. Manufacturing cranked up to full steam and now the chip market is oversupplied. Flash memory and DRAM are basically commodities, so they've gone from being overpriced to cheap as beans in about a year's time. Most of the big flash manufacturers have either cut production or announced production cuts, so I would expect pricing to recover a little bit later this year and then slowly march downward with Moore's Law.

Yeah thats an unfortunate reality of computer parts where "commodities" are involved. The intel 670p got all these amazing reviews - that is, while it was new, made by intel and very expensive. I recently picked up a 2TB for 74$ or whatever - now owned and made by Solidigm (subsidiary of SK hynix) Is it going to have the same "guts" (and performance/endurance etc) as the originals?
SK bought Intel's SSD business and combined it with their own business and then rebranded it as Solidigm. If you bought a 670p, then it's going to be exactly the same drive that got rave reviews all those years ago, made in the same factories, likely by the same employees. I've been eyeing that 670p deal, but I just don't need more storage...

Will the Amazon locker discount work on this?
I've tried it and no, because it's "fulfilled by amazon" and it has to be "sold by Amazon" to qualify. But your comment was still a good reminder to take advantage of the offer.

Is the 2 TB for $70 a good deal? How does this brand compare to the Samsung?

Nevermind

This one is only $3 more

I haven't purchased this specific one - but have purchase a couple usb sticks (wish Temu and stack social)

When I did a bulk test they all failed - hard. I'm not exaggerating when I say one device advertised 2t but held less than 64 gigs.

While one should rely on backups , I shouldn't have to worry about the data being there between day 1 and day 4. To that end , have any of these drives been run through a a good testing cycle?

That name Teamgroup seems like repeating itself. My mind seems to reject it.

I initially ordered the 2TB AX2 but then canceled immediately and got the PNY for $3 more. Don't really know the difference other than the PNY is slightly faster with writes and reads and it's a more well known brand

They used to be called TeamXtreem. But I think they might be embarrassed by that name and spelling and changed it.

This feels like a deal that hits front page because everybody's just like "dang, what a price! look how far we've come!" but nobody actually needs or wants a 512gb non-nvme SSD nowadays, and the larger options are better $ per GB anyways.

anyone reminds me if its good with DRAM or not?
You don't get good drives this size with DRAM at these prices. You'd have to step up to something like a Crucial MX500 or Samsung 870 EVO.

They're both bargain basement drives. I wouldn't be surprised if they had the exact same guts. The only reason I'd personally lean PNY is because I've had slightly less trouble with their products.

Quote from hardwarefailure :
This drive and the Silicon Power (also for a few $ more) claim to have SLC cache vs none. While this is not near as fast as a DRAM cache it should be better than nothing. Main advantage is for quick small in and out writes/reads the SLC cache can be used which has a) more endurance than TLC or QLC and b) can end up limiting writing all together on the main drive, thus (in theory) increasing the entire drives endurance. Does it really work? Is it implemented properly? Does the PNY also have this and simply not list it? Hell if I know.

All of these drives are low end. If you are worried about your data - back up back up back up. Thats 100x better than "relying" on a "premium" drive for "piece of mind" for data safety. Reinstalling an OS and apps takes literally minutes, even less if you are restoring from "system" or "image" back ups.
Basically all modern consumer drives have a pSLC cache (of one type or another), whether they advertise it or not. They increase write speed (until filled) but they don't increase endurance. Actually, it's the opposite. They decrease endurance (and increase Write Amplification) because most of the data is written twice, once to the pSLC and a second time to the native NAND. These drives don't actually have SLC NAND, they run a portion of the MLC/TLC/QLC in pseudo-SLC mode.

Additionally, DRAM (in drives that have it) performs a completely different role. It's main role is to store a copy of the mapping table (FTL), which tracks where data is physically stored in the NAND. DRAM does increase both performance and endurance because the controller doesn't have to constantly read/write FTL data directly from/to the NAND.

Backing up valuable data is essential, regardless of what drive you use. There is no drive with perfect reliability. Even if there were, there are intentional (malware) and unintentional (user mistakes) ways data can be lost from a drive that's in use.

TeamGroup and PNY are bargain basement brands. Samsung is top-tier. While there are definitely Samsung drives with issues, they're not in the same league.

Almost any 2TB flash drive is going to be fake. I've been quite annoyed to see Newegg peddling them in their promotional emails, albeit from third-party sellers. You have to be careful who you buy flash drives from and, even then, still test them.

While I've had issues with TeamGroup USB drives performing terribly and even losing data, all of them have tested at their claimed (admittedly low) capacity. I've only bought them from Amazon and Newegg.
