Don't look at someone's phone and judge them if they are rich or poor. There are rich people with old cheap phones and there are definitely "poor" people who paid +$1k on phones and paying high monthly plans that they really shouldn't be.

Ummm. You do realize that the phone works during the first months with calls, texts and data? Some people would be happy to use unlimited data in that first month. All those apps, games, camera, etc. work with or without service. Lot of people use multiple phones. I do. Lot of people have lots of wifi outside their home especially with some cable service they may use.

* I have a Pixel 6a and I do like it but it has its cons. The battery life isn't that good and the screen is little bit too small at 6.1" for my liking for browsing chrome/youtube so I prefer to use my other larger screen phones with the big battery at home or my Samsung tablet at home when browsing chrome or YouTube. For me to use my Pixel 6a for browsing chrome/YouTube is wasting battery on a phone that already doesn't have solid battery life and just not that good of experience on 6.1" screen vs my larger screen phones. Answer? Large screen phone with solid battery or tablet.

* 6 months goes by quicker than you think. People aren't like upgrading their phones after every 2 months and it is "so needed" to upgraded from their phone. Patience is a virtue especially for Slickdealers who know a good bang for the buck phone deal or knows money saving tips on deals.

for those new to M deals.

suggest

read wiki

lots of good info

trust me

here is sample:

To have the phone unlock automatically in 180 days (6 months)

You need to have activated the phone 180 days ago.
You do not. repeat do NOT have to pay for service 180 days

the above has been true for most every metro deal in the past.
both apple and android

Most people get the 1 month service.
Then simply place phone in a drawer .
wait 6 months.

The sim can be left in phone or stored safely.
It does not matter, as long as you DO NOT THROW AWAY THE SIM until you get a confirmed unlock

Phone should/will unlock in ~180 days + 6 -10 days.

best chance of success as follows:
During the ~6 month wait.
YOU can use as wifi device.
keep sim in phone.
when getting near the 180 day , have phone connected to wi-fi.
Try to unlock the device, once 1-2 days from day 180 onwards.

- None of us knows when Metro is going to close this unofficial loophole, .
-However this has been in effect with Metro phone deals for last ~4-5 years

Exercise your own judgement,

store told me I must pay taxes on the MSRP of the phone which comes out to be $30+ (that is normal correct?), also need to pay $20 activation fee where as internet order doens't? and lastly, i need to purchase the $60 plan not the $40, the $60 plan includes hotspot (is that right? only $60 qualifies?) At least a couple stores all told me the same thing.

Gotta go to a corporate store. These "authorized retailers" are a bunch of scam artists and can make up rules on the fly.

i put the filter on the metro map to find corporate stores, but i dont see any in the whole US. Every single store is listed as "authorized dealer"

Edit: Looks like the only corporate stores are around the NYC area.

I see 3 in my city. They are pretty rare. They have an orange map marker, not purple.

The chipset is on par with the 2 year old A52s

Not a good deal at $90 imo
The A52s had a Snapdragon 778G chip. That phone had a higher antutu score than 84% of smartphones. Did you expect to get the latest most powerful processor in a phone that costs $50 phone +$40 plan? With real world use and for regular users, you don't notice the 1-2 second difference between a game opening up. There is nothing wrong having a phone that puts up +500K antutu in 2023.

The Snapdragon 765G still runs quite fast and snappy in my Samsung Galaxy A71 5G. While my Pixel 6a has a more powerful Tensor processor, lot of people aren't going to notice the slight difference. I ran a speedtest between the Samsung Galaxy A71 5G and Pixel 6a and I was quite impressed how well the Samsung did. I remember getting like 340K antutu with the Samsung Galaxy A71 5G and the Pixel 6a is over 700K antutu but in real world use, you don't notice it.

What is the con with powerful processors?

BATTERY LIFE

With these upper midrange processors, they make the phone's battery life much better. This is why my Pixel 6a's battery is just ehh or ok and the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE has a poor battery life. My Samsung Galaxy A71 5G has great battery life and this A54 5G has better battery life than my Pixel 6a and S21 FE. Battery lives matter. I always laugh when some company brags about "all day battery life" as if that is some great achievement. One day battery life is a CON to me.

How does this compare with the A14 or the A23?

Thank you for the update. I just ordered it online. I was actually considering going to the store today.

$94.30 after taxes.

I know I will enjoy it as I was a big fan of the Samsung Galaxy A71 5G and the A54 has improvements over that like the processor, camera, 120hz, stereo speakers and larger battery. I am currently using a Pixel 6a as my daily driver. I like the 6a but I do miss a larger screen. Some people will say to pay extra for the S21 FE but I do really like a solid battery life and having microSD support. I am definitely putting a 128GB card inside so I have 256GB storage. Storage matters to me. Plus I have an Exynos in my Samsung tablet and it runs AWESOME so I am not really worried about Exynos. I am a normal user. I am not into demanding games where I need a really super powerful processor especially if it hurt the battery life. My Pixel 6a has a powerful processor and it does hurt the battery life. It is what it is.

Good deal at $60ish though
Try finding an A52s for $60. Hell, try looking for one for $90 brand new.

Good luck.
