Don't look at someone's phone and judge them if they are rich or poor. There are rich people with old cheap phones and there are definitely "poor" people who paid +$1k on phones and paying high monthly plans that they really shouldn't be.

Ummm. You do realize that the phone works during the first months with calls, texts and data? Some people would be happy to use unlimited data in that first month. All those apps, games, camera, etc. work with or without service. Lot of people use multiple phones. I do. Lot of people have lots of wifi outside their home especially with some cable service they may use.

* I have a Pixel 6a and I do like it but it has its cons. The battery life isn't that good and the screen is little bit too small at 6.1" for my liking for browsing chrome/youtube so I prefer to use my other larger screen phones with the big battery at home or my Samsung tablet at home when browsing chrome or YouTube. For me to use my Pixel 6a for browsing chrome/YouTube is wasting battery on a phone that already doesn't have solid battery life and just not that good of experience on 6.1" screen vs my larger screen phones. Answer? Large screen phone with solid battery or tablet.

* 6 months goes by quicker than you think. People aren't like upgrading their phones after every 2 months and it is "so needed" to upgraded from their phone. Patience is a virtue especially for Slickdealers who know a good bang for the buck phone deal or knows money saving tips on deals.

for those new to M deals.

suggest

read wiki

lots of good info

trust me

here is sample:

To have the phone unlock automatically in 180 days (6 months)

You need to have activated the phone 180 days ago.
You do not. repeat do NOT have to pay for service 180 days

the above has been true for most every metro deal in the past.
both apple and android

Most people get the 1 month service.
Then simply place phone in a drawer .
wait 6 months.

The sim can be left in phone or stored safely.
It does not matter, as long as you DO NOT THROW AWAY THE SIM until you get a confirmed unlock

Phone should/will unlock in ~180 days + 6 -10 days.

best chance of success as follows:
During the ~6 month wait.
YOU can use as wifi device.
keep sim in phone.
when getting near the 180 day , have phone connected to wi-fi.
Try to unlock the device, once 1-2 days from day 180 onwards.

- None of us knows when Metro is going to close this unofficial loophole, .
-However this has been in effect with Metro phone deals for last ~4-5 years

Exercise your own judgement,

Just to confirm, my Metro Samsung A13 5G unlocked today on the 181th day. Metro SIM was in the phone most of the time and was being used occasionally as a WiFi device after month 1. I actually put in a different Metro SIM into the phone and that didn't matter. The number was never ported out but according to others, that wouldn't have mattered either.

Now I'm trying to flash the stock SM-A136U1 firmware via patched Odin but the flash failed at prism.img. I was able to restore it by re-flashing the Metro firmware though, thankfully. Not sure if anyone has had any luck flashing Metro Samsungs to stock?
I don't think SAMSUNG US variations can be Odin, mostly you cant get OEM unlock option, you can't proceed further without OEM unlock...give it up..

I'm a bit new to this but my understanding is that OEM unlock allows the bootloader to be changed. If it's using the same bootloader, couldn't you theoretically flash a different AP CP CSC? I was able to flash my AT&T Samsung S21 FE to stock. However I found out after I made this post that Metro's latest firmware uses a newer bootloader than the latest XAA firmware. Samsung doesn't allow you to downgrade or change the bootloader, neither could Odin flash the XAA firmware with the Metro bootloader. So yeah I gave up for now until maybe the XAA firmware updates.

You're right. My samsung s8 was acting weird. It was throwing an error message about the system UI not responding.

I flash it with samsung OEM version (whatever was last posted build). It worked like a charm.

Some carrier phones require you to have a carrier SIM inserted to update firmware. This is the case with AT&T branded Samsungs at least. Stock firmware can do updates with any SIM. Also debloats carrier apps like myAT&T etc and removes carrier splash screen.

Good to see someone still rocking the S8!
Mine is on its last legs. The battery doesn't last very long and I can barely install any new apps on the 64GB storage.

In theory if you have same bootloader version you should be able to swap between carriers or non carrier US version, I never try it and I don't think anyone dare to try cuz it may brick your phone, betcha OEM unlocked then Odin, it's always suggested by XDA guidelines..

My MetroPCS A54 I probably just leave it as is ,waiting for 6 months expires and get carrier unlocked.. most of junk apps can be easily removed or disabled..so doesn't bother me...

I have a MicroSD card for extra storage. Battery is fine if you use it on battery saving setting. Otherwise cell phone batteries won't last for single day on max power setting.

Specification wise it is still good phone and works fine for me. I think A54 is S8 with new component with extra memory and SD card.

I don't like the thickness of the A54 and the camera lens sticking out.

i feel the a54 for 94 is the best bang for the buck.
based on these budget to mid range phones of late.

Even S23 camera lens sticking out (most of the latest phones). S32 is 0.30 in and A54 0.32 in thickness but length/width makes A54 feels big. Most of the phones are big unless you go with regular S23 size.

I was at bestbuy other day and checked A54 thickness to everyone S23 and pixel 7 series (which is 0.35 in thick). I felt A54 screen was better than pixel 7 series and only S23 ultra was best screen (also most expensive for a reason).

Does it add to the thickness of the phone overall?
A family member uses A10 and their phone is thin & light, almost the same size & weight as the S8.
The case is 7/16" thick, so that is the overall thickness with the case. I don't know if your family member has a "plain" A10 or A10s, or A10e. But this comparison shows the A10 is almost as thick as the A54. The A54 is a little over 1oz heavier than the A10, probably due to its 5000mAh battery.
