Can you unplug the amp from the speaker and just hook the speaker to a head amp?...In one of the pictures I see 2 cables (white/red)

That's the reverb tank (red and white cables). You'd need to wire an input jack to the speaker wires for the setup you're looking for. This does have an effects loop, so you could plug in any preamp to expand on the built in tones.
