NAS drives typically are designed to be powered on and spinning for long periods of time. This makes them good choices for, as the name would suggest, NAS & other server needs. External drives are usually not specifically designed with that use in mind and are more like traditional HDDs. You can use either for streaming video off of it, depending on your use it may be better to have a more resilient NAS drive in your server or, especially if you need portability, having an external could be more useful.

WD RED drives give a warning in Synology using WDDA (Western Digital Device Analytics) to be replaced if the power on hours is more than 3 years.
Can I rebuild a RAID after failure if the replacement drive has warnings?
