Serious question, Why would someone purchase this over a Intel Core i5-13600K which is the same price but appears to have better specs?
Great question. So for existing am4 users this is a bios update and the chip away from running it. Also, these use alot less power and run cooler so no problems air cooling which is alot cheaper than going liquid. Less power means you might be able to save on a power supply or reuse one you already have. My 5800x3d run 50-60c w/ my peerless assassin III I got for $38 on amazon.

I am considering selling my 5600x for ~$100 and upgrading this to future-proof since I wouldn't have to swap out any other components. It's paired with an AMD 6950 XT right now and only game on it... hmmmrmrmrmhrm decisions decisions.
Be aware that 5800x3D runs hot. If you are sporting stock cooler right now, then you have to upgrade that too.

Fantastic Deal. AM5 has too many issues right now to justify its price tag.

Oh and Most rendering programs use your graphic card processor more than your CPU, so don't worry about getting more cores with the 5950X
h.364 and h.265 10bit will use cpu multi cores more

Because this is targeting people who already own a compatible AM4 motherboard, and want a drop-in upgrade that will extend the life of their existing system for the next 3-5 years as opposed to having to rebuild their system.

I'm running a 3600, b450 pro, 32gb ddr4, originally paired with a 2070 super, but have since upgraded to a 6900xt. I've been assuming the 5800x3D would be my next cpu, but also thought the 5600x would be a decent upgrade for the price. I do a little CAD work, a little photo editing, nothing heavy tho, or at least nothing my current setup can't do.. My question is to see what other's opinions are. Are there better CPU's for gaming for the price, orrrr should I buck up and go AM5? My main goal is to not have my CPU be the bottleneck when gaming. Oh, and I'm running a 49" 120hz 5120 x 1440 monitor and if the game supports it then I'm always playing full screen at 5120 x 1440.. Just seeing what the opinions are out there. Thanks for the feedback.

I'm not going to disagree that a 7900xtx is in a different tier than a 5800x3d, but your link is to Halo MCC which is a very old set of games that's easy to cpu bottleneck. 5800x3d is much closer to keeping up in more modern games, especially at 4K.
Oh man, you're right. I changed it to something like doom eternal and no bottleneck. Thanks for the info.

I think it's a bit hard to say actually.

It still looks like a 5800X3D is still a decent value. A 5600 is a good step up, but the X3D still is comparable to recent gen CPUs with newer games using more CPU power even at higher resolutions. I wouldn't go with AM5 right now, but faster RAM speeds are also becoming more important.

That 7700x is way tempting at the same price as the 5800x3D. Granted that's a new board and ram but I'd also be able to get pci4 out of my 6900xt plus better ssd options. I hate when it's time to upgrade, lol

Should I go with AM4 or AM5 platform? DDR4 or DDR5 memory?
I want something that will last 10 years. My current desktop is 10 years old. Rendering video is too slow.
AM5 just for the opportunity to upgrade in the future if needed. If you go AM4 and don't like the performance in a few years you're kinda stuck there. Definitely a lot less likely to last you another 10 years if yo go AM4.

most who buy the 5800x3d are people who already have been on AM4 for years and are just looking for a cheap upgrade to keep performance high in gaming for a few more years until without having to shell out cash for a new motherboard, ram, and cpu. AM5 motherboards and ddr5 ram will also be cheaper by the AM4 5800x3d people feel the need to upgrade. That's really why this chip is so popular.

Ordered this last night and it arrived this morning right at 7am, can't wait to drop it in. Upgrading from a 5600X and it's paired with a 3080 Ti. I think I'm officially done with my current set up and will let it ride until the NVIDIA 5000 series, at the earliest.

Just upgraded my to this from my 3600. Huge difference even at the ultrawide resolution that I play at. I have a rtx 3080.
Did you have to update your bios on to your motherboard?

i agree, i bought 13600k @249.00 few months ago and running 5.3/4.2ghz stock voltage, absolute best bang for your buck, using for my son 3 monitors gaming Twitch streaming with OBS no lag whatsoever.

I just upgraded to this from a 5800X and saw a difference in gaming. But again, I upgraded specifically for gaming (with my RTX 3080 FE).

The reason this CPU is an "upgrade" is because of the dramatically increased cache (96 MB vs 32 MB). You will not see any performance improvements in day to day tasks, and some games won't even benefit. However, if they do, it's usually a noticeable improvement. Personally, I saw noticeably higher (and smoother) framerates in many AAA games, like Cyberpunk, CoD MW 2019/Cold War, etc.

My point is, it's the best AM4 CPU you can get for mixed usage that includes gaming. But it's not an upgrade for productivity tasks, because it's a teensy bit slower in terms of clock speeds than the 5800X. If you're not putting this in a gaming computer, save your money. Otherwise, upgrade to it if you can.

TL;DR -- If you're coming from 3000 series or older, it's a GIANT upgrade. If you're coming from 5600X, it's still a noticeable upgrade. If you're coming from 5800X, it's a slightly upgrade, but only for gaming.
