There is no such thing as a good kibble. Go raw/fresh/human grade.

Since Purina (and Iams, Royal Canin, Science Diet) and 99% of grocery store stuff is pure poison full of non-digestible filler like corn and very little meat, MUCH better.
yeah, I fed my cat Friskies wet food and basic store brand kibble for years because I didn't know any better, and wish I'd known the stuff I was giving him was garbage.

I now avoid grains. Cats are pure carnivores. To my understanding (and obviously I'm not a vet so don't take my word for it), unlike dogs, they really don't utilize any nutrients from carbohydrates and grains, so any pet food that throws those ingredients in is really just looking for cheap filler.

I now feed him either Tiki Cats wet food (apparently pretty reputable) or the Kirkland grain-free wet food that they recently started stocking, which he doesn't seem to like as much but appears to be of good quality and is cheaper to buy in bulk.

For dry food I feed him Kirkland's grain free salmon kibble, I believe.

Tiki is excellent. Kirkland's organic canned is OK, but its dry is below average:

This is the stuff I use by Kirkland, but it's part of their Nature's Domain label: https://catfooddb.com/product/kir...27s+Domain

Do you have a recommendation that would be better?

I also feed my dog the Nature's Domain turkey and pea stew wet food, do you know if that's any good?

I can't advise on dog food.

Nature's Domain wet is above average. And a good value considering much of the competition is more expensive.

thanks.

so the nature's domain dry cat food I linked to above -- it does say it doesn't contain any meat byproducts etc., out of curiosity what makes it not a good choice? what should I be looking for when browsing labels?

Byproducts = low-nutrition slaughterhouse waste.
Carrageenan (a bulk filler made from seaweed) = suspected carcinogen.

From Petsafe.net:

Ingredients to avoid:
Corn and wheat gluten.
[Generic, unidentified] meat and grain meals and by-products.
BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole)
BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene)
Ethoxyquin.
Food Dyes (Blue 2, Red 40, Yellow 5 and 6, 4-MIE)
PG (Propylene Glycol)
Rendered fat.

very interesting - I just checked Tiki Dog kibble and their chicken and duck flavors both had chicken/duck meal as the second ingredient, so I guess I will be steering clear of their kibble. It's a shame because their wet food seems to be very good quality.

Meal can be OK in a mixture with meat as primary, as it is simply rendered dehydrated meat. It's hard to avoid in dry foods. However, Kirkland's feline weight management SKU includes meal and rice as primary ingredients; hence its low score.
With Tiki, you can bet they're using top-tier IDENTIFIED meal (eg. chicken/duck) compared to grocery store brands that likely use unknown generic "meat" or "poultry" meal, or lower grade stuff:

I checked my bag of salmon and sweet potato dry food (nature's domain) and the ingredients don't contain anything you mentioned apart from salmon meal, so I think I'm going to stick with it. seems to be higher quality perhaps than the standard Kirkland kibble. I think the nature's domain brand is a more premium alternative.

The good thing about Kirkland food is that they sell a lot of it so if there is a problem you hear about it.
