Thiis Philips 4k sounded interesting especially for this price, but reading reviews some had problems and defects. You really get what you pay for and I'd avoid. Sony, LG, Samsung have better reliability and reputation per Consumer Reports.

Agreed, I wouldn't touch an android OS TV. Roku OS version is much better on budget TVs. I've heard that Google is pushing out an update that performs better on budget processors. I'm not holding my breath.

I would add that every budget TV I've owned has been better than the last. Even, the better known brand budget priced TVs are most likely outsourced to other OEMs. Especially lower priced Sony's. It's not like the 80's and 90's when manufacturing was in-house.

I was also a subscriber to consumer reports for 15+ years, but they don't test enough budget TVs to be relevant anymore in that segment. if you're buying a mid to high priced TV, then yes. I would say the same with rtings.

Also pretty much agree. Although to me it's not so much Android that's in question as it is the reliability of the brand. I have a recent Sony 48" OLED Android TV, and it performs very well. Philips as a TV brand is not as high a tier as Sony, LG, and Samsung as CR ratings show. So I'd probably stick to those brands for peace of mind.

But this Philips at this price may work out well for some folks, so I don't want to downplay the value of this thread either.

The Philips brand TV is licenced by Funai out of Japan. The Westinghouse brand is licenced by TongFeng out of China.

I prefer the Roku OS. I would suggest going with the Philips Roku version also sold at Walmart. See my link in an earlier post. I picked up one last month and it's been good. Funai (Japanese) has the license for Philips, Magnavox and Sanyo. The formers since 2008. They're the biggest selling Japanese manufacturer in the US. They're also OEM manufacturer for other electronics. I've had Philips and Magnavox Roku based TVs for the last 3 years and they've had no issues. Although the larger 65" TV do often get damaged in shipping. It happens, but that's another matter entirely.

Prior to the above, my budget brand was Insignia. As I'd prefer to not have a fire TV, I switched.

If you're wanting peace of mind, you can always pickup a Square trade plan 4 or 5 years when ordering. Just keep in mind the first year you'll have to go through the manufacturer for any warranty work per usual.

I prefer budget TVs Six years was the quickest one failed. When next purchasing, you get more features/greater size for less. It's a win, win and I'm not dropping large sums on something that will eventually fail sooner or later.

So I got a couple of the 50" model of this same set for $139 each at local store clearance. For the price paid, it is a nice TV. Be aware they have a very annoying high pitched whine from the cheap transformer when TVs are "off". Seems to be common on these from what I have read. But overall the picture and quality is fine for the price.

Looks like the panel is 60hz, kinda expected that but idk why they advertise 120. Might grab the Roku one, prefer it over android anyday.

Buy the $20 Onn Google TV box from Walmart and slap it on any TV you want. The new 2023 model is better than Google's own $50 box with a far superior remote control.

I thought I read a long time ago that most budget TVs marketing 120hz, are really 60hz. Only those that market 240hz are really 120hz. Either way, I'm not a soap opera effect fan, so I just turn off that fake 120hz marketing feature.

I just got the $20 box haven't tried it yet. Is it really better than the $50 CCWGTV? One thing I dislike right off is it lacks USB-C and uses old ass Micro USB which adds another complexity to attach storage or whatever.

I find it to be faster than Google's dongle, yes. Both require the use of a OTG cable (~$6 - $10) to add storage. Google has faster USB, but does it matter on this? The remote control on the chromecast SUCKS unequivocally. The onn remote is nice only lacking a dedicated play/pause button, but with so many that can be reprogrammed with button mapper, no big deal. The onn device is not a dongle though and is less aesthetically pleasing as the chromecast, but it does stay in the shadows. Bluetooth works well on both. I think you spent your $20 well.
