Absolute drivel, and likely ill-intentioned misinformation. Even the 8GB model is more than enough for lots more than "web browsing and basic office work"; this 16GB is good enough for the large majority of power users.

Great deal! For those of us who prefer to "bring their own storage," the 16GB/256GB would have been better (assuming the price would have been proportionately lower), but at this price it's fine and allows you to use it right away w/o needing to worry about an external storage solution right away.

I'm typing this on my $500 base M2 purchased from Costco last month (currently hooked up to two 27" 1440 displays). I'm a looong time PC user (the last time I touched a mac was in the 90's). The learning curve to MacOS was a bit rough, but I'm slowly getting used to the new OS. It's hard to believe so much power is packed into such a small (and cheap) package.

This thing will stream 4k (2x speed) YouTube without a single stutter. It is silent, despite the active cooling.

I'm almost surely going to pick up a second unit during Costco's sale. I'll probably have one unit permanently tied to my TV (for YouTube, Steam, CloneHero, Chrome, etc). And another in my office. For my office computer, I'm tempted to upgrade to the "Pro" model, but I'm likely deluding myself that I need the extra power relative to the $500 base.

If you are thinking of switching from Windows, this is the deal to get. Don't let the name or the ridiculously small size fool you: this rig is a monster for doing actual work and has precisely the minimum configuration you want as a power user. If you need extra storage, get external. It has TB4.

Couple that with Costco's 90 day return policy for computers and you have a good long time to return the machine if macOS isn't for you.

But you don't get the apple keyboard trackpad though. Only drawback. I think there is the magic keyboard but Id have to research into that and it's probably expensive too.

edit: magic keyboard doesn't have trackpad. I only say this bc I use my trackpad all the time on my.old MacBook

like a couple others in this thread i too for a moment wondered whether to keep the 1500 studio or switch to this. the way i see it the studio has an extra 16Gb, gbe for external drives, better case/heat-proofing, faster hd read/write, front ports, processors are a wash(?) accounting for the extra gpus. that's probably worth the extra $400 but the question is do we need it.

if the m2pro mini with 32gb and 1Tb (max r/w is only available with 1tb) becomes available for $1500 then it becomes interesting .

Upgrade to mx keys anyway. Finally a deal on a Mac that isn't 8gb. Good riddance.

Wanted to note that the Costco description is wrong regarding the number of Thunderbolt ports.

Two Thunderbolt 4 ports, one HDMI port, two USB-A ports, headphone jack, should be

Four(4) Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI port, two USB‑A ports, headphone jack https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-ma...gpu-512gb#

Having 4 TB ports and none of them taken for power is a great advantage over the laptops.

Would 16GB with 512 be preferred or is 256 generally enough for installing programs? Was about to purchase a 16/256 but wasn't sure if installing too many programs is a valid concern.

This or the laptop for $1500?
This does not include, monitor, keyboard, mouse/track pad. So unless you have those things you will be paying a bit more than the MacBook pro... And you lose portability.

Feels like apple is really flushing out their m2 inventory for the m3 in June. If it's gonna be 3nm, it'll be wild.
The M2 pro and M2 max chips just came out at the end of January. They Are not close to those being released as the M3 is next not the M3 pro or m3 max. In theory they will launch the M2 ultra before even upgrading to the M3 pro or m3 max. So I don't think they are flushing out to prepare, but rather trying to sell more. I wouldn't expect a major update to the pro line for another year and a half - 2 years.

256 is not enough. 512 is pushing it to not be a issue but expect to have to back things up. If the 256 is far cheaper just connect a Samsung t5 or t7 to it and problem solved. I edit a ton of 4k on my Samsung t5 SSD and realistically no noticable differences unless you pop out a stop watch which is unrealistic scenarios.

If you don't have a good laptop already, I'd opt for getting the laptop instead of this one imo.
Something like this would likely last a while, and would it be worth saving some money in the short term by getting this, versus the convenience of getting a laptop (especially for travel)and spending a bit more?

1. Physical place for immediately-processed returns.
2. Employees that are treated like human beings.
