Saying you're an early adopter is a stretch if you're only on year 3. You must be doing something wrong if you're having battery issues already . I am on year 7 and my batteries degraded to like 50%. Still using all my original batteries the came with the tools.

I am an early EGO adopter (got them when Home Depot had the contract with them). I have 5 of their tools and 4 of their batteries. I am on year 3 and all my batteries are turning into paperweights. My 5ah hold like 30% of their original charge, and my 2.5ah literally give me 15 minutes or less on like my leaf blower.

The tools work great. The convenience of electric is super. But I am mad I am going to have to drop $500 already on some new batteries. There is no way I would even come close to $500 of gas at this point.

I'm not saying don't go electric/EGO, just be aware that you will be replacing these batteries MUCH FASTER than you anticipate. Don't go electric because you think it will be cheaper in the long run - it won't be.

I don't the the lone batteries are really a deal unless you already have all the tools you want? You can get the 765 blower for $300 with a 5ah battery for example, and that blower is pretty beast. Or a 650 blower for 220 or so.

I bought an Ego string trimmer with battery from Home Depot approximately 7 years ago and both products still work perfectly.

Is this the same battery that comes with the trimmer and blower for $200 from Ace?

Same. Except I also own a blower, an edger, and a mower - 4 batteries total.

Interesting fact: I have a handful of batteries of all capacities that are 6 years old and are still going strong. On the other hand, of the two 7.5 Ah that came with my snowblower bought in 2021, one was replaced under warranty after 1 year and the second one just failed and is also being replaced under warranty. That makes me wonder if their battery quality has gotten worse over the years.
Same experience with my snow blower that I bought 2 years ago. I have warrantied the snow blower and 1 of the battery. All my older batteries without the "upgraded fuel gauge" are doing fine though.

I've had 2 batteries for 5 years. I think a lot of people don't understand how to care for batteries. Keep them cool and dry (duh). But also always charge as slow as possible. I have a slow charger and a fast charger. If i dont need the battery right away i put it on the slow charger. If its hot, i swap the batteries fater. I never run it down to zero and if im storing them long term over the winter i try to use about 20% of the battery before putting it away.

Batteries dont like being too hot or too cold. They dont like being over 80% or under 20% charged. If you can make an effort to follow these rules, your batteries will last way longer. I just had a battery totally die this year, but i think i got water into the controller. The other battery still holds at least 80% of its original charge.
Proper winter storage is also important.

Turbo mode at high speed barely lasts 15 minutes if anyone is wondering.

I have two of each - trimmer blower and mower so nice to see battery only. I wouldn't mind a chainsaw or power inverter power supply on sale. 4Ah is the one size I don't have. I do turbo on the blowers a lot, one in each hand, got through two lawns earlier today. Had a blast!

Exactly in the same situation as you. Its not just EGO. I've 4 Ryobi 18v batteries and now down to 1. I just recently bought a tool on sale just for the battery, and guess what? On the 2nd charge, the charger was complaining faulty battery already!

You must be abusing your batteries then. Leaving them on charger constantly, sitting out in heat too much, running them to flat all the time, charging while super hot, leaving stored for months fully charged, etc. As I have had Kobalt 80v tools and several batteries for almost 10 years and have noticed very little degradation. And I have not heard of anyone having widespread issues such as yours.

Follow proper battery care guidelines and you'll do better. I take care of my lithium batteries properly in my tools and electric vehicles and have seen very little capacity loss over the years.

Of the two 5ah batteries I own, my original (2018) is going strong and the newer one (2019, with the advanced fuel gauge) is failing. Interesting that your newer battery is failing too.

If you have only had the tools for 3 years you are not remotely an early adopter. I got my first Ego tool more than 6 years ago and I wouldn't consider myself an early adopter as they have been around for 11 years. The one battery that died (after I dropped it) was replaced under warranty. My two other original equipment batteries and the warranty replacement battery are still going strong.
