I'd say it has less to do with the title of the dev and more with the type of work.

So for example a front end web developer isn't going to see much difference between an M1 Pro/Max and a regular M2. Most of their workload is dependent on single-threaded performance, which the M2 is better at. The exception here is if they're routinely running a bunch of VMs simultaneously for e.g. compatibility testing.

Backend devs might be better off with an M1 Pro/Max depending on the language they primarily work in… some languages and associated toolchains are much better at utilizing multiple cores than others. They're likely to need a lot of RAM though because e.g. running a lot of Docker containers (which are VMs under the hood) is memory intensive.

The group that most unambiguously benefits from an M1 Pro/Max are developers working on native desktop or mobile apps… these devs are mostly writing languages like C, C++, Rust, and Swift which all have well-multithreaded toolchains which will see dramatic speedups in even incremental compiles with more cores in the mix.
Great deal but I hate that these only include a 512 GB drive. All that power but limited storage.
Bought this and not the M2 Pro because I don't believe 16GB of RAM is sufficient for the next ~5 years when its shared with GPU, and this is actually cheaper than an upgraded Mac Mini with 32GB.

Simple, have had this Mac Studio since release day. Used for photo editing A7Riv and V files across Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop and occasional video on Final Cut Pro. Has been flawless. Highly recommend for creatives.

External storage for data, internal for OS and a few things… very common configuration for Mac users vs a big ugly box full of PC crap. 😀
It would take up pretty much near zero additional space having a larger ssd or hd

Any professional using this power is using external drives so maybe rethink your argument because it's 100% wrong.

Good grief. This or the $1100 M2 pro mini deal?
I think this Studio can do one more external display. Normal Minis can only do two external displays, but the M2 Mini can do three external displays.

The M2 (and M2 pro) chip is a little faster than then M1 Max in single CPU situations for sure.., like Adobe Illustrator.

Nice to have more inputs/outputs and 32gb ram on the Studio, where as the M2 Pro mini deal has 16gb ram.

Maybe theres slightly more fan noise on the Studio?

If youre not in a rush, the M3 chips are gonna def be a step fwd in performance (more than the M2 to M1 mild improvement). Hope you get a good computer deal that fits your workflow and budget!

100% wrong? Just because someone has been trained/ trained themselves to use an external drive does not make it the one and only way. Storage is not that expensive, and bigger drives tend to have the capacity to write more TB over the lifespan of the product. (Not always true, but generally).

And since this is a product that doesn't allow repair on that component, it becomes built in obsolescence. That said, I neither disagree nor agree with the amount of space, but the comment was a little short sighted of other people's workflows. There is not 1 way for all. It is unfortunate the bigger drives are such a high increase in price as well as it forces people who can't afford it to shift their methods.

None of the M1's support more than 60hz. M2 Pros with HDMI can support 144hz. I would like to have that as an option just in case. So pretty much all M1s on the upper end is a no go for me at this point.

I just bought Mac Mini / M2 Pro - 16GB RAM/512GB. Should I invest more $400 for 32GB RAM but M1 Max? My works are 50% Web Browser (more than 25-35 tabs same time) 20% Lightroom, 20% Premiere 4K, and 10% are rendering/encode Handbrake, My current PC is 3995WX/256RAM/12TB SSD, I am looking for switch to MacOS for electric consumption

Component prices are plummeting so much including SSD and RAM that it will be interesting to see what the new baseline for Apple machines is? Will it be 512GB and 16GB of RAM? M3 is also rumored to be right around the corner.

Can confirm, the company-provided M1 Pro Macbook Pro I use for work can drive an Alienware AW2127D 2560x1440 monitor at a full 240hz and even supports adaptive sync (aka G-Sync or FreeSync) with a range of 1-240hz, so when there's nothing changing on screen the GPU isn't wasting electricity drawing unnecessary frames.

The Mac Studio supports up to 5 external displays.

Simultaneously supports up to five displays:
Support for up to four Pro Display XDRs (6K resolution at 60Hz and over a billion colors) over USB-C and one 4K display (4K resolution at 60Hz and over a billion colors) over HDMI
