Just picked this up the other day from Target and had them price match it by adjusting the price! Thanks!!
This watch also has a QWERTY keyboard.
For those with kids who aren't ready for a cell phone, this works as a phone essentially (can make/receive calls & texts) with less chance of losing it or staring at it non-stop. You can pair it with a bluetooth headset for non-speakerphone calls. You can keep tabs on your kids' location and can even put some money on it for them. Parents can dictate "school time" so it can't do some functions...they can override it, but you will know. Can stream music, etc. Quick charge is nice since kids might forget to charge it. They don't need a cell phone to set it up, just need a parent to have an iPhone to set it up and can then add them on your plan for $10/month (plus fees so probably $15). This one supposedly is a bit more durable and better battery than SE which is what most people would get for kids, but SE is $300 best brice unless you sign a contract for 36 months (at least that's the case with Verizon) to take $150 off the $330 price. That contract is too long for the age of my kid because we will probably get a cell phone before then and won't want the cell service anymore on the watch so the savings is not really saving me at that point.
Apple watch pay works whether you have your iphone or not, you don't need cellular service for that to work. The only pros to having cellular is you'd get text and emails without your iPhone connected or nearby. this is handy for people who leave their iPhone at home to work out in the gym or go on bike rides, also nice that navigation works perfectly without the iphone so I can do bike rides and it literally works like a tiny iphone on your wrist.
If you buy one of these be sure to charge it for quite a while before doing anything with it. My 41mm purchased in February was completely dead and I was getting very frustrated with it. I decided to go on with my day and when I came back it was fully charged and working perfectly.
With cellular, what functions are available on its own without paired with an iphone? Can this work standalone for Apple Pay (payment, transit card etc.)? My primary phone is a Google Pixel but I do have an ipad and a spare iphone for initial setup if needed, would be interested in this for international travel and what not if it works well on its own. TIA

I had purchased an Apple Watch Series 8 for $360+tax and returned it after 60 days to Costco because in the end it had zero difference from my Apple Watch Series 5 44mm with the exception of the pulse ox, which you will never use. You can get a refurbished or used Series 5 for $100-130 easily. There is zero reason to have any Apple Watch since Series 5 unless you're getting it for an ultra low price. It's the same f-ing watch.
I'm running on a Series 4 today with no issue, is it worth upgrading to this?
It's not as easy as yes or no. Keep in mind you can probably trade that series 4 in to Apple. Won't be worth much, but it's that much more off the series 7, kinda.

with cellular can it make calls (ex: with Airpods) and text on its own number? or it supports data only plans and by "text" you mean iMessage or something?
Mainly, I am looking to use the watch on its own without cell service on an iphone since I am primary on Android but interested in a second "mini" phone on the wrist.
