They both burn long, and both give good flavor, I might give the edge to the Kamado Joe on flavor, and I might give edge to Kamado on size/consistency… if you have a smaller grill then some of the kamado chunks may be too big. In general bigger chunks burn longer, so I prefer kamado to b&b. Average size of b&b chunks I'd say is like a Twinkie or a whole dill pickle, size of average kamado chunk maybe double that, which makes it better for really long cooks.

How does Amazon package this? Is it going to be broken to bits due to handling?
The first time I ordered it was deliveries in a black wrap which worked well. The second time they delivered it in a standard oversized box which had bits of black dust in it when I opened it. Both instances Amazon delivered it directly to my home.

How does this compare to B&B Oak Lump? Walmart currently has B&B 20lb bags for $14.99.
The Walmart stuff isn't 100% oak lump, it's some hardwood blend "with Oak"

I love this stuff. Royal oak is weak compared to KJ. B&B is literally trash. bought 4 bags. i always stock up at $20ish. we use 4 bags a year.

I just picked up a 40lb bag of El Diablo mesquite lump charcoal at Costco business for ~$23. I think the local Ace has it for $27. I'm finishing off my last bag of KJ, and think this El Diablo stuff burns slower and has more large pieces than the 4 bags of KJ I went through. Kept my Kamado Joe stable at 700 deg for 3 hours for 🍕 night.

Opinions on this vs royal oak lump (red bag)?
The Royal oak is fine, but the rocks in the bag don't burn well at all.

The last batch of B&B I got through Walmart had some rocks in it, pretty annoying. I bought 8 bags once of kamado joes at a local warehouse for 6 bucks a bag and none of them had rocks in it. Up to that point I was a long time user of B&B

Has this gotten better? Used to be my favorite, but then I had a good run couple years ago of multiple bags having the biggest pieces be golf balls with most of it just pebbles of lump. Also had lots and lots of rocks, even a whole brick one time, and other "not charcoal" junk in the bag.

Switched to Jealous Devil and have been pleased but willing to try this if they've gotten their act together.

Of course bigger pieces take longer to burn. But that does not translate into longer cooking times versus the smaller pieces. Lump charcoal is a fuel and has a BTU/pound. Using smaller pieces means you can add more lump (fuel). The more you start with the longer the total burn time. It would be like having 20 gallon of gas in your car versus 15 gallons.
small pieces burn faster and hotter because they have a higher surface area and thus more oxygen exposure. A lb of small pieces, say 20 pieces, can all burn simultaneously, whilst a lb of fat chunks, 5 pieces, have to burn through from the outside in. Even as smoldering coals, the inside can't burn as fast as the outside

Mine arrived today in a massive box. I wasn't prepared for how large this box or bag was.

Not sure since how it's packaged but i can tell you that they ship it via USPS...and USPS will not carry to your front porch (heavy & oversized); called Amazon to have them issue a refund. Not schlepping to the post office because they're too lazy to have the package properly delivered.

So you're saying I shouldn't have had them put it in an amazon box for safety? Wink oops
