If it had 2TB of storage instead I probably would've pulled the trigger. Yeah you can swap stuff between the internal drive and external storage as needed but it's a nice quality of life upgrade to not have to think about it.

I can justify this beast because I still have unused B& H gift cards from youtube and the trade in on my macbook pro at costco is $975. Plus I need to spend some money on office stuff to write off on my taxes. this should future proof me for a few years.

Too bad these got thicker and heavier than the previous gen MBPs or else I would be all over this. My 2012 is getting long in the tooth but I can't justify getting a heavier and less portable laptop. Whoever designed these new machines' form factor needs to get fired. Wish Steve Jobs and Jony Ive were still around to make sure things were designed slimmer and sleeker.

Better cooling, incredible battery life etc for being a bit heavier is something most people are fine with it. You won't find a comparable laptop in a smaller form factor.

And if weight is such an issue for you that is the reason they make a 14" version and alternatively the air line laptops series

It has fewer CPU cores than the M2 pro so it's not going to beat it in CPU tasks but you're getting the M1 Max for the improved GPU performance over the Pros. If you don't need that, then there's no reason to pay more for the reduced battery life on the Max.

I edit the post as I found that Apple value the cpu diff to be 500:

Apple M1 Pro with 8-core CPU and 14-core GPU. as the base.
Apple M1 Pro with 10-core CPU, 14-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine – +$200--- the 16 inch laptop I am referring to is this.
Apple M1 Pro with 10-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine – +$300
Apple M1 Max with 10-core CPU, 24-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine – +$500
Apple M1 Max with 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine – +$700--- this laptop comes with.

I wish my employer can pay that for me Smilie
