I did some research on this years ago and will share what I learned. It's not inherently dangerous to refill the 1lb tanks, as they have their own failsafe release valve, if they get too full.

Yes, you can fill it and have no leaks and then it'll get warm and expand and will release the pressure.

Another issue is the shut off valve integrated into the screw top can go bad and not hold the fill. To remedy this, I always put a little piece of tape on the full ones that says… full. If I use it, off comes the tape. If I find an empty one with tape on it, I throw it out.

The laws involved here are only regarding transportation. These small containers are not approved by DOT to be refilled and then transported.

You can actually add more than one pound by cooling the little canister (freezer) or heating the larger one (in the sun). I wouldn't recommend doing both, as you'll surely have too much pressure when the little canister comes to normal temp. Then you'd lose some of your slick savings.

These devices in general: VERY SLICK.

My father in law brought one camping once that he filled this way and the bottom swelled on it quite a bit.

Anyone else chime in here... My understanding why you don't want to do this is because all tanks should be inspected regularly by an expert and these smaller thanks are not made for multiple uses.

I'm all about saving a buck, but do you really want to bring something along on a family camping trip that could actually explode and maim/kill you or a loved one because you wanted to save $10-20 on a small propane tank? Just my thoughts.

There are numerous others for $5.99 regular price. Any distinguishing features that a novice should pay attention to that distinguish one unknown Chinese brand from another? They all look basically the same.

Outside of the potential for overfilling (which this item claims to be built to prevent), I've always found that more of a ploy to force people into purchasing more canisters instead refilling for cheaper. Unsure if that checks out or not though.

there have been several threads on the idea of using these before. Amazon does sell two re-usable flame king 1lb tanks for $33 which for the safety conscious should be the ones this adaptor is for.

transporting - unfortunately that's exactly what most people use them for - camping trips etc away from home

Hope i don't get flamed. Just seeing this post and haven't researched into this before. Are there adapters that connect the 20lbs tanks to grills over whatever that take the smaller 1lbs tanks? Are there any safety concerns with that?

I believe so. Don't know how long one would last though.

ETA: found one

DOZYANT Steak Saver 20lb to 1lb Propane Tank Adapter for Disposable Throwaway Cylinder, Converter Universal 1 Pound / 16.4oz Disposable Small Tank for 20 or 30lb LP Gas Big Tank https://a.co/d/42s8GMD

ETA2: whoops misread your post. Ya they sell hoses that do this. My Weber Q has a hose that attaches to a 20lb tank. Totally safe and works perfectly.

I've been using similar one for years. I don't see how you could possibly overfill those since even when I maximize temp differential by keeping 1lb in the freezer before the fill I can only really get it up to maybe 3/4 full. Saves a bunch on 1lb tanks which I use for camping and torch.

Yes, and I (and many others I've camped with) have, for many years, used these hose adapters for the 20lb tanks to the camp stove. Never any issue and can't imagine how there'd be any safety issue. So nice to never worry about being out of fuel.
