Anything at/under $15/tb is a good deal. Happy Hoarding!
I'm using a Seagate 12TB Ironwolf NAS HDD right now, and bought it specifically because it was supposed to be one of the quieter drives. It was so noisy inside my computer that I had to take it out and put it in an external hard drive dock. The Dell HDD caddy [amazon.com]in my computer uses pins, no screws, so it just made an extra loud reverb sound.
I've been searching for either an ultra quiet hard drive, or a sound-reducing external hard drive enclosure.
Any recommendations to get a quiet hard drive? I use it only for backups with Macrium Reflect. Full backups and Backblaze backups are what really make it annoying to listen to; the incremental backups are quick and not that annoying.
I found a product called Scythe Silent Box Heatlane HDD Enclosure, but unfortunately they are discontinued. I even emailed and asked if they might have any refurbished or scratch and dent units I could buy, but no luck.
A product called Acoustiblok would work great to build my own enclosure, but they only sell it in giant rolls.
I've had issues with the vibration of drives resonating through my NAS, even after attaching shock-absorbant "feet" like the ones used for dishwashers and turntables. But I found I could reduce or eliminate most of that by applying some electrical tape on the edges of the drive sleds, where they meet the metal of the enclosure. You might try something similar with your Dell drive caddies -- just make it snug enough to reduce the opportunity for the drive to vibrate much.
