Verizon:
$200+$35 activation fee+$65 x 2 plan cost for 60 days = $365 + tax on device paid to walmart at checkout
$365+$12.44 = $377.44 for TX

I WAS able to get those refunded, I did not pay activation, nor any prorated/first month charges! The ideal way, is You need to pay off the phone, and cancel within 3 days of activation to get refunded everything. When you call to cancel, reconfirm you will get the refund for safe measure, and specify you want to cancel the line immediately (otherwise it will run until end of first month).

information can be found ON THIS PAGE [verizon.com]
"You may terminate service for any reason within 30 days of activation. You will remain responsible for your Activation Fee unless you terminate service within three days of activation."

I just went through the steps and it's a $35 activation fee and the cheapest plan is $65/mo plus taxes.

So at least $300 if you cancel. That's half off the price from apple.com.

I got this.

I am planning to activate, make a test call, go to the Verizon store and pay it off, and then port out the number to Tello to cancel the line. All on the same day.

From what I understand the phone should auto unlock in 60 days. Also I should most likely be refunded for my activation and first month charge. Right?

How long did it take for them to unlock the phones? Do you have to commit to having service for 2 months to get the phone unlocked?
Back then, SE2 was actually sold unlocked at Walmart. I paid it off only because I wanted to buy more than one and if I remember correctly, I could only do upgrading one at a time. I don't know about this "new" model, all I know is the 12 mini was also on sale back then but it was carrier locked. I bought a 12 mini for my college kid and he had to wait for two months before he could use it (on Tello).

Where did you read that phone will unlock even if it does not have active service?

So what's the consensus? Verizon easier to get out of this unscathed than ATT? ATT 256GB for same price is tempting! (NVM ATT sold out again)

once again, 36 m or 3 m . it does not matter. reading just a few post will tell u this

no need to add to the confusion
I stand corrected. But help me better understand, what is the cheapest out of pocket I will be paying if I do everything right? So I take out the cheapest Verizon plan, pay the activation fee, activate it and then on the same day go to a Verizon store and pay off the phone and cancel the service?

This is from the Verizon website:

Beginning on 7/23/2019, devices purchased from Verizon are locked for 60 days from the date of purchase. This policy applies to new and existing customers, postpaid and prepaid plans and customers porting their service to another carrier.

Please see examples below for more information:
*Device purchased at full retail price or on a device payment agreement – Locked for 60 days from purchase
*Device purchased on a device payment agreement and paid off prior to 60 day requirement – Locked for 60 days from purchase
*Customers porting out service – Device remains locked until 60-day requirement has been met
*Verizon service canceled while device is locked – Device remains locked until 60-day requirement has been met
*Prepaid customers – Locked for 60 days from purchase

So it does appear if you pay it off and port the line out immediately, it will still unlock after 60 days. Not sure about getting the activation fee and first month service charge refunded though.

Do you need to go to a store to pay it off, or can it be done online? What about cancelling service? Is porting the number out the best way to do this?

So what are the steps. Can anyone confirm the below steps?

1. Buy the phone from Walmart
2. Once you get the phone setup the account and talk to customer care to pay off or can it be done online
3. And once paid off via customer care, how do you unlock the phone? Via customer care or online portal?
4. Once unlocked can you put another sim the same day or wait for 60 days to unlock?
5. When can you cancel the service? Before or after 60 days or after you unlock?

My understanding is the phone needs to be activated with Verizon. Then, so long as phone is paid off and account not in collection status VZW will unlock at 60 days automatically.
the 60 days is a gamble.
