Minisforum has the poorest coolng designs; they are morons. They stick a heatsink on the CPU and they think they are done - to hell with the rest of the system. As for the YouTube reviewers you listed, they are all paid shills. None of these reviewers perform any type of prolonged stress test on these machines - if they did, many would fail thru overheating. ETA Prime is the prime shill. His reviews are vacuous and all he does is play games - there is almost nothing to learn from him.

Since the RAM is soldered, I'd recommend spending the extra $50 to get the 32 GB version.

I am correct in understanding this thing has onboard graphics? Has anyone transcoded 4K HEVC on Plex? Can it handle it (~20Mbps)?

I agree to an extent, that Robtech does a better job testing these than ETA prime does. ETA P does not even check noise levels.
ETA Prime has only ever one question... can I game on this? Realistically, a mini PC is about the worst choice for a 3D gaming machine. It's interesting to know if you could game on one as a secondary thing, but most gamers would be better served by a laptop or a desktop.

I don't see why you'd get this over a Steam Deck or ROG Ally. The decks have massive community support, huge companies behind them, portability, accessories, and lots of games guaranteed to work.

Is it? For the specific/directed use cases of the raspberry pi, this seems overpriced

By the time you add things to the Raspberry Pi like:

  1. SSD Drive
  2. SSD Adapter
  3. Case
  4. Case fan
  5. Heatsink
  6. Power Cable
  7. HDMI Cable
  8. Memory Card
it ends up being easily $200-$300 and a Raspberry Pi cant even run Windows.

You're really bloating those costs. Case + fan is $5 on Aliexpress. SSD + Adapter is $35. Those are the only addons you need to improve the Pi.

Beware: RAM is on onboard, which means it is NOT upgradable. Also, there's no extra slot for HDD, which being replaced with microsd card, You won't be able to use dual monitor since it has single HDMI, and no ethernet port either.

You lose all those but save $70.

I'm not sure about this form, but their minipc is known to shut down suddenly because of poor cooling design. It tends to overheat quickly, but they deleted all negative reviews from their site. I'm sure they pay commission to SD to promote their site

I agree. Rei is adding a bunch of stuff that's not essential to run a raspberry pi. I'd also like to add that the pi is not targeted for use with Windows. If someone's looking into a pi to run Windows, I'd say they don't know what they're doing.

Sure if you wanna use a $35 no name SSD and some parts from Aliexpress you could go cheap on the parts I guess. I usually buy the parts from Amazon which is more expensive.

Im not saying that anyone is going to try to run windows on a Raspberry Pi, what I meant was that if you wanted to you wouldnt be able to do it since the hardware is so limited in comparison to a mini pc like this which is around the same physical size.

I'd rather this thing be slightly bigger with better thermals.

I don't think I'm going to be carrying this around in my purse or pocket as the listing suggests.

Very tempted to be honest. Recently built a PC with my kids and it was great to show them the parts. But this form factor is hard to pass up being so small and taking up little to no space.
My understanding the components use are pretty much laptop components.
Quick search those with similar CPU, RAM laptop like ThinkBook, HP EliteBook, etc, probably cost around $700 but without battery, screen, keyboard, touchpad, etc. So the performance probably more like those laptop and not desktop PC. If you don't need better component for production app, games, etc, probably good enough.

It has usb-4 that supports display port. It shows triple monitor setup right on the page… 🤦 ♂️ You can use usb hubs, usb Ethernet dongle, and external SSDs and as well.

It's small. Don't expect a million ports and ssd slots. 🙄
