Most dealers have $25off coupon for oil change. just fyi. Costco auto connect sometimes give 15% off on service and parts
Sure, but dealers also range in their pricing pretty wildly. I say that because I used to live near a dealer (Toyota) who operates oil changes as a low-/negative-margin way to maintain a customer relationship (charging $30 to all comers or offering them free for life if you bought your car there) whereas just in the past month I called the local Toyota shop for a standard oil change rate for a Toyota Sienna and was, without any sense of shame, quoted a rate of $180. I was even told that slots tend to fill up as people get ready for summer drives so I should schedule as soon as I could(!).

Good luck!

What if we have the oil already bought ? Would they still change it ?
I used to have a small mom & pop shop that charged me for the labor and used the filter and oil. Sadly they shuttered that part of their business during COVID and focused on the (presumably higher margin) car wash business they operated next door.

I am not aware of any quick lube type location that could support such a model since so much of their margin is made on the oil. In other words, the price charged at a quick lube place is primarily related to labor/operational costs and profit - their costs for filters and oil might add up to only a couple of dollars of their service price for an oil change(!). This is particularly frustrating as so many quick lube locations fixate on charging a relatively significant premium for oil over 5 quarts. Like luggage fees, this premium protects the business from outliers (like some huge diesel) and helps them manage their costs but also generates some nasty customer interactions (as in "I know you may have that bottle in your car of exactly the same brand and viscosity of oil I've put into your car, but I'm still going to charge you a quart rate for the fraction of a quart absorbed by a new filter when installed in your car to get you to the dipstick fill line before I let you roll out of here where you could have topped it off yourself.")

Good luck!

Time to drop toyotas until they do direct to consumers. They are all still charging markups over msrp because of Toyota branding. This is hurting their image since Toyota not doing shit about it time to drop them too.

They also decided to lower production making their vehicles more expensive intentionally. Leaving me with bad taste.

Gosh I hope all these manufactures and dealers go bankrupt for trying these stunts.
Well to be fair I believe Toyota has had a notorious dealer salesperson reputation for decades(?). I've never bought new at Toyota, but it's always the weak point in the conversation when I'm recommending a purchase of one.

At the same time, I've generally always had a great relationship with the Toyota parts sales person (really properly an "inventory manager"). From getting the "internet" price back in the 90's all the way up to getting best ebay prices today, those people just need to move units and seem to operate their business with a reasonable amount of self-awareness. This is in contrast to Finance Managers who treat you like the place will collapse into shambles if they don't get you signed up for a tire or windshield warranty.

Good luck!

A word from the wise: Don't vary where you get your service done. I always went to Pep Boys for service about 15 years ago. One time I got home and noticed oil spots in the driveway. I called them and spoke to the manager. He told me to bring it in. After about 30 minutes on the lift I was told that the pan drain was stripped from the prior change. When I informed him that I only bring it to this exact location, he looked it up and he got quiet. They ended up replacing the oil pan.

My point is not to bash Pep Boys because they did a decent maintenance job for the life of my cars when I lived in that state. My point is that if you jump around, the current shop can blame the last shop and you won't have a leg to stand on.
You also highlight an important need for some basic vigilance about inspecting the work being done. I just brought the minivan back from VIOC last week and they clearly checked the air filter (whose replacement I declined since I do that myself). But they also failed to latch the air filter back into place. Not the end of the world, but certainly a good reminder that as the owner your best bet with a quick service oil change location is to take their checklist and replicate it yourself to both validate that you're getting the offered service (air in the tires? wiper fluid?) and leaving in one piece (oil in the engine or sitting in a puddle beneath the car?).

Good luck!
Jon

You guys have much more faith in fast oil change places than I do. They typically hire people with zero mechanical skill for the lowest wage possible.

Walmart has this option. I believe they charge $19.99 if you bring your own oil.

Oil change prices in CA are insane now. They'll offer a $39 special, but none of my 5 cars qualify for it. A 13 year old Honda Civic or basic Mazda CX-5 always cost $75+ when I pull in. I've never been able to get the low priced deal. The dealerships with coupons are a better deal now and I stopped going to these places. Good coupon and I'll give it a try, but won't be surprised if they find an excuse to charge $75.00+.

Do they allow you to bring your own oil and filter to these places? The place I use normally stopped allowing that and also stopped allowing you to drive in. Now you need an appt a week out.

Willing to try this with the 50% off but would be even better if you could bring your own synthetic and they only charge you labor? What is the cost if you bring your own?

Same for me. Do you happen to live upstate NY?

It used to be $65 just before COVID. Now I change it myself. I had to buy a bunch of tools to make it happen, but I'll recoup that cost with the next oil change.

Heard these places charge an absolute fortune for oil changes. Read reviews of places you are going you'll usually see someone say it was over $100 for synthetic.

I paid my dealership $50 for a full synthetic 3 years ago it's around $70 now. How these places charging even more?

Convenience, 100%

In most places you can't just roll up to a dealership and get service on demand. For VIOC, pull off the road and pick one. 15-20 mins later you are back on the road. (in most cases)

It's a good choice. I'm 45 yrs old and have never had anyone change the oil in my cars or powersports.

I would never take my vehicle to a dealer, those places always hire unqualified wannabe mechanics. They're always hiring and firing, now if they would put their ASE mechanics to change oil that would be a different story.
