As you can see in the article DDR5 clearly had better memory bandwidth but.. it actually has much higher latency. Over time, i am sure DDR5 will get better and better but it does have limitations at the moment. For example, DDR5 at speeds other than 5200 or 5600 often have trouble on many motherboards. If you manual tweak it they often can work but detected settings are often iffy.

That being said.. certain applications do like more memory bandwidth like 7-zip or handbreak. Most applications like office, photoshop, premier or games are much less memory bandwidth sensitive.

So for 5200 DDR5 vs 3200 DDR4 your looking at a 2fps difference in farcry 6.

So is DDR5 better? sure but the difference is usually pretty small.

PC part picker:
2x16gb DDR4 3200 cas16=52$
2x16gb DDR5 5600 = 71$
2x16gb DDR5 6000=78$
So for $20 more you get roughly similar performance.

IF the mobo and CPU are the same price then i would go DDR5 for the 20-30$ difference.

That being said, 250$ for the 12600k and a z690 mobo is pretty solid.

another option that looks nice is..

Tech support gave me a different code. If SMBCT485 doesn't work for anyone, try BTS353.

Thanks. Its a DDR4 motherboard. Was hoping for DDR5✌️
For this price, it's pretty hard to argue though.

$79 G. Skill 32GB 3600 CL16 or $50 32GB 3200 CL16 Silicon Power but IMO, DDR 4 is dead. I'll try to squeeze out as much as I can.

Thanks. My understanding was that for the average user, DDR4 and DDR5 would only be marginally different.

As an aside, my existing PC is an i5 6600k with 16GB ddr3

Rather build a 7600 where you can get it for $180. The difference is about $100 with 32GB 3200 CL16, even less optioned with 3600 CL16. 12th gen + DDR4 is dead.

This particular combo would be a great budget build, secondary PC, or home server type build, a far better deal than anything going with a Ryzen 7600 right now. The last 7600 + MB deal posted here was $325. Ryzen 7600 alone is almost as much as this CPU+MB combo, and it doesn't exactly perform significantly better than the 12600k. Add MB and DDR5 to the Ryzen and it's a lot more than $100 difference. Your comment about 12th gen + DDR4 being dead isn't relevant to anyone who doesn't upgrade parts every year or two.

where can we get a Ryzen 7600 for $180, that is even cheaper than 5800X
