Today I was in a Costco in Central WA state and picked up the Northrock XC27 mountain bike marked down to $250.00. The store has 4 more on the floor.

It took me about 30 minutes to assemble it. So far I'm really impressed.

For more info on the bike, check Costco's website. Obviously I paid less in store.

Just a reminder that .00 prices at costco indicate a manager clearance price that only apply to that specific warehouse...

Yo wtf ... Just bought this literally 4 days ago online since the price went down from 479 to 339... Ok I'll check out my local Costco too then. Thanks for the info!

Note: agree with the review, I do like this bike as well.

I purchased this from Costco at $399 and then found that Canyon was having a sale. Ended up getting a bike from Canyon at $499 that has some extra bells and whistles. $250 may have made me reconsider though!

Bought one of these for my wife a few weeks ago at $300. Incredible value there. Not a super light bike, and definitely not high end components, but for someone who wants to give mountain biking a try without buying a $1000+ entry level bike? Wholeheartedly recommended

Would this be good for casual riding on bike paths?

It is built for casual rides on bike paths. If at the end of the day you don't like the fit, take it back to costco.

If I remember correctly, it's a 17" frame.

Looks like the real normal price is about $340 which seems about right for a 7x3 speed.

If you fit a Kent Trouvaille, it might be a better deal even at a little extra cost.

how's this compare to the Boss Three Disc that Costco also has?

https://www.costco.com/infinity-b...10733.html

Are they both basically "Bike-shaped-objects" as the condescending ones like to call them? Or is one better than the other?

I know one is hybrid, the other is mtb ... but in terms of value... is one a better value?

Why do they even make bikes with 3x7, 3x8 speeds, etc.? I am a bike noob and I just want the simpler the better. Give me the reliable Toyota Corolla with 1x7 and without a gazillion extra gears that are marginally 0.9% spaced apart, which I can't even use because you're not supposed to match 'big gear 1' with 'small gear 8' etc.

Seems cheaper for manufacturers to use simpler, less gears too. Why do all the cheap bikes with 21, 24spd and you need to spend more for less?

Kent Trouvaille can also be upgraded a lot more than this if you decide to do piece meal upgrades with dropper post routing, HG10 freehub and a tapered headtube. It has a lot of good stock components like wider bars, short 31.8 stem etc.

I was just at Costco near me looking for this bike specifically and I could not find it. I'm not familiar with Costco how the stores are organized but I was in the outdoor stuff in the main middle section and didn't see it.

That's why I'd advise it even at a little extra cost. You get more out of the box including a single speed that is easier for non-mechanics to maintain, and then you get a better future platform as you said.

A 3x8 has way more gear range than a budget 1x9.

You can get a super low gear for hill climbing, but you can still get going 20+ mph while keeping rotations per minute low. On a single speed you'll usually retain low end power for hills, but you lose the top end.

Another pro of 2x and 3x drivetrains is that you can drop into a lower gear while going up a hill. With a 1x you either have to shift before a hill, or you have to surge forward, coast, and then shift. Otherwise, a 1x will do a crunchy shift and significantly wear the drivetrain.

As for manufacturing, 3x components are very cheap. Square taper bottom brackets are arguably more complex than modern bottom brackets, but they are still cheaper because they've been around forever. The tooling has been paid for many times over.
