Google "Samsung EVO 870 failures" before gambling your data on it. My 2 TB just died. It was only one and a half years old and was used for typical home PC stuff.

I bet those other drives don't have any DRAM, that's why they're cheaper.

Keep your spinner as a backup. You can never have too many (backups).

Is there any reason for them to? These drives pretty much max out the performance you're going to get on a SATA drive, and most new offerings will probably focus on NVME.
Based on the contents of the post you quoted, "reliability concerns" would be my guess as to why they were asking.

Getting warmer Samsung. After decades of keeping SSDs at 1-2TB and jacking up prices ever higher the competition is finally forcing you down a peg.

Teamgroup and Silicon Power 1TB are now at $31 so you still need to up your game. Both produce decent SSDs. At this price you are still 61% more expensive than your competitors.
Now it's decades? LOL.

Where are the Silicon Power and Team Group 1TB drives $31? The cheapest I see are ~$35-40. Also, they're not in the same league as the Samsung EVO. They're both DRAM-less drives and the Silicon Power is most likely QLC. For a cheap SATA drive, I'd at least go for the PNY CS900.

Of course they don't have DRAM. They're also a lot slower. I'd bring up reliability but the 870 EVO also has a checkered past in that regard.

Remember to ask yourself what your time and any POTENTIAL headaches are worth vs the relatively few dollars more you might spend buying a comparable drive with a stronger reliability history.

Would appreciate the opinions of those who think about and research this more often than I do as to which drives have the best balance of cost and reliability.

This. In the absence of knowledge, I would gravitate to the big name here in the this thread. Is there a better / more reliable alternative?

I absolutely agree. That's why I try to recommend quality drives. Reliability is generally my biggest concern for storage devices. It's depressing to see the number of people who act like there's nothing different between a bottom barrel drive and a top tier model. A quick skim of recent user reviews on Amazon show complaints of failure at:

PNY CS900 - 0/10
SanDisk SSD Plus - 0/10
Samsung 870 EVO - 1/10
Crucial MX500 - 1/10
Team Group AX2 - 1/10
Crucial BX500 - 2/10
Team Group Vulcan Z - 2/10
WD Blue SA510 - 3/10
Fanxiang - 4/10
Patriot P210 - 6/10
Silicon Power A55 - 6/10
Leven - 7/10

Now, that is a small sample size but it does show some stark differences. That doesn't even get into the massive differences in performance.

By the way, I recommend against looking at history that goes back too far, say more than a year or so. Components change, with some companies quite often. It's extremely unlikely that any SSD bought today has the same components as one sold five years ago. This is also why those SSD databases/spreadsheets should not be trusted, especially with budget drives.

For SATA, I currently think the Crucial MX500 is the best bet. I have not seen any widespread reports of failures (yes, I know about that one Reddit thread). There have been some software/firmware issues but they don't seem to be anything that would appreciably impact the average user. The Samsung 870 EVO has had widespread reliability issues, resulting in data loss and eventually complete failure. These issues may or may not have been fixed. The WD Blue 3D / SanDisk Ultra 3D has been replaced by the far inferior and less reliable WD Blue SA510 (sometimes sold as "newest generation"). There is an SK Hynix drive but it's not very common and I don't know much about it. That's about it for top-tier drives.

For budget drives, the PNY CS900 is my current choice. It has a fairly small pSLC cache (~20GB at 1TB) but does better than other drives of the same class, once the cache is full. It uses the Phison S11 controller, paired with 96-layer Toshiba/Kioxia TLC. I've had good luck with this combination in the past (mostly in Micro Center's Inland Pro drives).

The reason is the 870 has a worse reputation than other past models (which I use).

Thanks for posting this. I'm trying to find what is probably the most reliable excluding Samsung (and excluding nvme due to an older machine). Crucial MX500 also came up for me, but it's hard to evaluate and I haven't looked into it much yet.

I bought one about a week ago for $60 but could not get it to work--- Windows 10 clean install failed every time which worked on a Crucial and on another computer, successfully formatted but shows up as unallocated and Samsung Magic was finicky. The 870 evo installed on a very old laptop a few years ago hasn't failed. I totally second this:

I also resented the timing of this discount and Amazon wouldn't do any sort of price match but it turned out to be defective after all. At least their return procedure is quick and easy even for an SSD. Then, however, I got to wondering... what if it carried something stealth that collected my personal information...? Or maybe I should rather be worried about my paranoia.EEK!

Maybe you need a surge protector or stop dropping your laptop? I aint never had any Samsung product fail. Aint sayin you intentially lying but it could be some other factor? Im using and 840 EVO that got 27000 hours on it and not issues at all.

The 840 has no issue, and I also have an 840 running many years.

It is only the 870 that received complaints and mostly on high capacity (4TB). Maybe Samsung fixed the 870, but who knows? (I also have a 1TB 870 and 500GB 870 on unimportant machines, but running less than a year.)

Damn, Crucial MX500 is still considered one of the best..? I have a bunch of those from the Crucial recertified sales they use to do.
