Do the free phone/text sim cards work in Canada or the paid data plans or both? Or are you referring to just the wifi calling?
Both. Used Rogers Wireless in Canada. No roaming charges at all. You pay the $$ for whatever you want, and you can use the data plus unlimited minutes + text.

I tried Text Now for a burner phone. It's still considered a voip carrier (the carrier is Simbala or something, so it'll be flagged as voip, as opposed to Verizon, which will never be flagged as a burner. Gvoice #s have the carrier as "Google".)

They tell you your number will be deallocated if you don't send or receive a text every week or so. They haven't followed through yet. It works, honestly. Free text service and I think it uses the T Mobile network, all for a one time fee of like $5 or $6.

I also have a TracFone, that one lists Verizon as a carrier, so it's more reliable for OTP, but it's also like $6 or $7 a month to keep service.

Agreed! Going up in August for a few days, this will fit the bill for what I need. My primary carrier doesn't offer Canadian roaming (only Mexico) and I could live without it, did last year when we were there, but for this price it's worth it, as long as it works 😉
If your phone supports esim, check out the airalo app for data plans in Canada as well. I've used them before for, and for a short trip it might still be a better and easier option.

Supposely fees+taxes are included. Would be nice when they get something like this down to 8-9$

My granddaughter uses the free version. Works just fine and with Gmaps I can see her location. This is what you get: (350mb monthly)

$0.00 /month

Access email, maps, and rideshare apps on-the-go, along with unlimited nationwide talk & text over 5G speeds. Renews monthly for free; purchase a paid subscription to access more data at any time.

Never tried, so I can't comment on that.

I'm on the T-mobile $15 - 3.5GB hard capped plan since I have WiFi access most of the time. This might be a good alternative.
how can you get this T-Mobile Plan?

Does Textnow work for OTP? I am thinking about using it as my primary number. But not sure if OTP or authentication sms from bank or other services would work on it??

Hey Desi, it's still there. Just sign up through the app. All calls and text go through the app. You can also access your account through a browser. Make calls and text and access the history and text conversations. Great for monitoring the young ones.Smilie

I get Uber, DD and Apple authentication codes on it. I bought the SIM, so idk if without SIM you will.

However I can't use short code texting such as 888222 for Chipotle giveaways on Twitter. Then again... Google voice doesn't work for surprise short code either.
